Has anyone modified a squier vintage modified jazz bass fretless?
I was about to buy one and stumbled over this topic.....and it has sort of stopped me in my tracks. Some great pics here.
I need the chrome guard over the pickup....I am a lefty and play upside down and back to front and I need to hold my elbow 'out' from the dials.
Guess I should say I am an older bloke, havn't played for 35yrs, and got myself a Hoffner Icon a yr back (actually had a Hoffner as a kid)...it to is R handed.
I am keen on fretless just for the hell-of-it....something different to have a go at.
So if anyone has modified a fretless, I would love to see pics or hear ideas.
Cheers
Phillip
Err, I guess I had better tell you I am an Aussie.

First off ,Hi, I'm Craig (or fluffy, yer choice) and I've been having some fun tricking out my affinity P Bass. for starts it was an impulse buy but I decided instead of selling it I'd upgrade it.Sooooo... here goes : I'm replicating a '59 P Bass :D :D :D
it's in the shop as we speak getting an annodized gold pick guard, chrome bridge and pick up covers and the thumb rest, as for the pick ups out with the stock and in with Fender Original P Bass pick ups. for strings I'm putting on RotoSound swing bass 66's (I've played those for years and every bass I've ever owned gets and will get them  )
when she comes home from her surgery I'll post some piccies.
any one else had fun with their instruments???? I'd love to hear em.
I also tricked up a Squier Strat with a (purpously) horrible "aztec Gold" spray paint job beat it, nicked it scratched it up (aka vintage wear :o :o ) and put Fender Tex-Mex pick-ups in it. I cal it my "sleeper" cos it's the guitar equivalant of a 74 mustang with a 329 lol

Nice make sure you post the pictures! :)

Hi, I have a Vintage modified fretless Squier with a badass II

Image

then after a year I replaced the neck with a made in japan block inlays w/ vintage frets, a very solid neck.

Image

replaced the pickups with a standard J bass pickups and electronics- I replaced the entire control plate (came from my other Fender standard jazz bass), then added pickup covers, pickguard, thumbrest and tah-dah!"THE VINTAGE LOOK". The tone slightly improved due to the solid-thicker neck and new electronics.

I had to remove the Badass II bass bridge and install the threaded saddles because I just like the look and to make the bridge pickup cover fit.

REALLY cool, you really did a great job with it!!! congratS!! :)

What has me confused about your pictures is, the squier vintage modified jazz bass fretless down here seems to be a different colour.

Is that really the case, or have you made changes to your colours?
They don't look like the same guitar to me. Yours look excellent.

here's a link http://www.basspartsresource.com/bass_necksallparts.htm

I got mine on ebay, you might get it slightly cheaper at ebay. After changing the neck this bass is one of my best sounding bass, the neck is very good and solid, it's just slightly heavy + the vintage tuners makes the neck heavier than the body and makes it dive down.... but the sound and feel is so much better!!!

Hey Mark, quick question. I just bought a Squier vintage modified jazz (the natural one) and I love it. I just bought the chrome pickup covers, but before I install them I wanted to ask you about the badass II bridge. You said you had to replace the saddles, but isn't the length (front to back) of the bridge longer than the standard squier one? The bridge cover just fits and I'm hesitant to drill and then find out if I get the badass that the cover will no longer fit? From what you are saying, if I read you right it was the height of the bridge that mattered and not the length?

Quick question.
Where did you blokes go to for your parts....eg pickguard, chrome cover plates etc.

I found this site for pickguards.......

http://pickguards.us/materialoptions.htm

is it the tortise shell (brown) in Group E?

can't find a site for the bridge and pickup chrome guards.

Got myself another guitar....a great looking Fender Aerodyne, in sort of silver pewter colour, black pickguard....it looks brilliant, and my teacher (another old bloke) reckons its its really nice.

Cheers
Phillip

Phillip, I got my chrome covers on Ebay for $29 including the shipping - my local shops were selling them for around $40 -$45. So I saved a nice bit of change going the Ebay route. The seller actually turned out to be a dealer out in Arizona. Now I'm looking at changing the control knobs over to the black ones - and I'm seeing them cheaper on Ebay. I've been buying and selling stuff on Ebay for 10 years and only got ripped once -for about $20. All in all a good record. :)

@markbass4444

may I ask what tuning keys you used when modifying the Squier black j-bass to a "62 Jazz"?

The neck is stock right? unlike the one at the vintage fretless where you replaced it with JRF-B?

I'm having problems with the Tuning key replacements, well I'm using stock Squier necks for now. Any suggestions?

Here are my two modded Squiers.

First an Affinity P, I made the mirror pickguard, thumbrest, and the humbucker. The humbucker is two Delux Active V J pickups glued together, and wired in series.

Its pictured with a Fretless MIM Jazz neck, but I put the original fretted P neck back on last week.

Next up, is a Delux Active V, which I gutted, and wired passive, Vol-Tone, Vol-Tone, and a series/parallel switch.
The bridge pickup is a MIM 4 stringer, and the neck one, is made the same as my Affinitys humbucker, one half of which is a Cort pickup, other half a neck MIM 4 stringer. Tuned E to C with Chrome flats.

Great looking basses Dark, though the Delux Active V needs a new photo of it taken.
And welcome to the Forum.
