I have an Affinity series Squier J Bass. When the strings die, what would be the best strings to get in terms of tone and longevity?

1. How much do you want to spend?

2. Do you want to go with round or flat wound?

3. What sound are you looking for, give us an example of bass players and songs you like.

Round wound, Punk and Ska, Matt Freeman, Mike Dirnt and Ken Casey. And like 20 or 30 dollars.

Thank you, sir.

Mike Dirnt uses Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings and Fender 7250M Strings. Personally, I like Ernie Ball Strings, I haven't used Fender strings for a long time. You can buy these for $15.00 for the Fender's and $18.50 for the Ernie Balls.

Search the internet, there may be some discounts. I got these prices from Sweetwater, everything ships free too!

Many moons ago, Bass Player Magazine had an issue dedicated to reviewing strings. Even with all this data, it still will be your personal preference. As oxfan mentioned, the styles, your taste & your budget will dictate the end result.

The Fender's are a good string for the $.

Ditto on the Ernie Balls as a budget string. I'd suggest you try the Regular Slinky and the Super Slinky in succession. You'll probably like one better than the other.

Bit of advice for you. It is only natural to want to try a whole lot of different strings, however this creates setup headaches and can also be detrimental to the instrument. It is better to find one set of strings and then stick to them.

If there is a used dealer try a bunch of basses there and see if there is one string you like better than the rest. Then see if you can find out what set it is.

As for longevity, rounds usually go dead pretty quickly. A few rounds do last longer than the rest, but those longer lived strings are not $20 to $30 a set. I use Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass strings. They are going for about $60 a set. The upside of that is that they last for years. That's right, years. $57 a set at present, but when you get tired of buying strings every month or two try them.

I use DR Hi Beams myself. I like stainless steel strings tho. These are probably the longest lasting strings for the $$$. When I used to gig all the time, they would last 5 -6 mos, 1 - 2 gigs/wk. I pay about $22.50 - $25 for medium gauge (.45-.105). Good luck.

By all means! No one will laugh, it may elicit chuckles when we remember our first experiences.

PLEASE do that! But first go over the instructions HERE. http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html

Gary Willis has one of the best "HOW TO" sites on bass setup online. I think if you follow these steps your video will be awesome and nobody will laugh at anything but your hair, clothes, face and voice.
