I'll just copy and paste something I posted in another thread:

Try them out and decide which one is best for you. If you like them both, buy one and save up for the other. :)

And add:
As long as the bass has a good neck, decent fretwork, and setup you can upgrade the bridge, pickups, etc. and still have a decent bass without killing the bank account IMO.

To an extent I would say, some of the other brands make cheap version(s)of their expensive models, if you look at the set up from the factory it's horrible. All you get is the basic look, w/o the quality of their more expensive version. the MIM is cheaper, but the set up is not bad from the factory, same as the Crafted in _______ models, it's not a bad set up, the QC might not be on par with MIA, but I've seen MIJ/CIJ that is superb compared to the MIA.

That's good advice.

If your looking for a SQUIER specifically...

I'd say go with the Vintage Precision. White body with black pickguard. Ooh, but replace the pickups. Only then can you get the Sonic BOOM ur looking for.

Thats my personal favorite Squier. ^^

To tell you the truth, that's why I got the VM JBass, I never thought those pups would sound so good. I've never played with the VM PBass with an amp tho. This is my 1st passive equipped bass in a long time. I like the sound, with the correct set up on my amp, it sounds amazing.

If this is your first go to a local dealer and try both the P and J and just see which is the most comfortable. I own three Squires at the moment. A fretless Jazz, a Vintage Precision/Telecaster, and the Vintage 74 Jazz. I love all three.

Get a standar jazz (real fender).. I just tryed one at my local fender dealer and it was a nice sound the a normal p bas can´t get.. If u ask me get a real fender standar jazz bas...... :)

What's a real Fender Jazz Bass? A MIA, MIM, CIJ, CIK? Do tell? Cuz you're talking a $1000 spread there? Like I've said before, there are Squier instruments that can, not always, put even an MIA to shame. Squiers offer a lot of value for what it is, especially their Vintage Modified series.

Guys I need a bit of help.

I went looking at them and I had a go on the P Bass and it was brilliant. I didn't have time to test the Fender Mustang or Squier [Jazz]. Ijust would like to know which you guys think is best.

Thanks A Million.[/i]

BW, it all depends on what you like. I would say bang for the buck would be the Vintage Modified series in the Squier family, for the fact that it's a solid instrument for under $300. The Vibe series is also something to consider. As far as the Mustang, it's a Fender, so you're getting an instrument that's backed by Fender - Squier too, to an extent. Mustang's not my cup of tea, but it is a nice bass. It boils down to what you like and/or need. If the Pbass is what you end up with, try the P Bass Vintage Mod, it's a nice bass, for $30 more than the Squier Standard P bass you get Duncan Designed pu too.

i like the jazz bass cause' i like using the bridge pickup, check this viedeo up "slapping on my fretless squier jazz bass" modified with a new bridge, added a pickguard, i like the standard fender jazz bass look,The badass II made a serious difference! It was more punchy and brighter, sustain was better, I also replaced the strings (roto sound flat wounds) check out the video of my squire fretless with a badass II at http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseacti ... d=35735220
I installed a pearl pickguard and replaced the knobs with the standard jass bass knobs (slapin, funky) enjoy…
