I have a P-Bass myself..
but my suggestion to you are to buy a original Fender instead.
When you have the Squier and you are starting to be a much better bass player, you regret and will much more have a Fender bass..

thats at least how I feel it..

I bought a Squier Jazz in 1982, had it set up by a pro, put flat wound strings on it and have played it in our weekend band for 25 years playing classic rock 'n roll and country and I absolutely love it. Just last year I bought a Fender Precision, had it set up and put on a bass $@! bridge and seymour duncan quarter pound pickups and it is equally incredible I love them both equally. I am going to install a bad $@! bridge and some quarter pounders on my old Jass and I'm sure it's going to blow me away. In my humble opinion I would say if you buy a squier, get an old one at least 20 years old. They were real quality back then otherwise go for a Fender original.

Why not try both..??
The Squier Standard Series P Bass Special will allow you to play both P & J.
For the money you can't beat it. Play it till you find the sound you really like the most then if you want decide on a upscale Fender in P or J.
If I could afford it I'd like the Fender Aerodyne™ Classic Precision Bass.

I would recomend a p bass if it needs to be cheep. That's what i have. If the cost doesn't matter so much though, i would recomend a jazz :)

I've got a P Bass Special, and love it to bits. You'll need to get a proper set-up done on it, though, the factory setup had the action set way too high (1.5cm at 10th fret!).

I just with they did the P Bass in Sunburst, not the tobacco burst finish mine has :(

Check out the reviews on the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz & Precision on Harmony Central or Musicians Friend. I do not own one, but have played both at GC. The Jazz is especially nice. $280 is a very good price for this bass. Try them out. Also in this series is a Jaco type Jazz fretless.

I have the Vintage Modified P Bass, white with black pick guard. I'm a guitar player that was looking for a bass to mess around with. It's a solid bass and has good tone. The setup from the factory is not bad. The Duncan Design pickups sound just as good as the MIM Fender P Bass I tried at the same time. From all of the reviews I have read on my bass, the biggest issue was that the factory strings rattle a lot, which is the case. I changed the strings like everybody in the review recommended and it made a world of difference. For the price, you can't go wrong.

I have the VM Jazz, I got it so I can mod it a little. Stock is def as good as MIM, or some MIA dare I say. The Squiers have a gone a long way since it's cheap no good equipment. They still sell cheap equipment, but not good is not true anymore. Not great maybe, but not good, no way. Either Vintage Modified is great, yep, great for your money.

I've been using a standard jazz bass and I've been impressed with it so far. I really recommend trying the instruments out also to get a feel for each one and see which suits your needs.
