Greetings !
I just joined last night. Just bought my VM Special last week from Musicians Friend. Third bass I have owned over the last 40 years. :)

Got a question for 'ya. Is the battery powered "active bass boost circuit" on and draining the battery when the 1/4" plug is in the jack on the bass ? In other words, is it off and not draining the battery when the plug is not in ?

And.........can anybody point me to where I can find soft, fuzzy standard felt picks instead of the hard standard felt picks like the Jim Dunlop #8012 ?

I appreciate your response in advance and look forward to participating in this forum. Lots of good info here...I hope.

Mike

Greetings Mike,

Yes it's off and not draining the battery when the plug is not in.

I don't know for standard felt picks but I'm interested to get some.

I appreciate the feedback, Richard. I suspected that was the case but needed to have a confirmation from someone else.

About the felt picks.......I purchased some Dunlop felt picks from Musicians Friend hoping they were the soft felt ones like my old ones. According to all the reviews they were what I was looking for. Turns out they were hard as a rock. :( They do not sound like your fingers despite what the reviewers were saying. So, I made my own.

My wife loves to sew and it occured to me to ask her about the varieties of felt available. She said there is typically only one that is available at the local fabric store. She then pulled out a whole pack in a variety of colors. I soon realized that it had the same texture as my old felt picks. That's when I got the following idea.

If you want to make a felt pick of your own, grab any plastic guitar pick you like and cut out it's shape 2 times in the felt from the store. Leave about a 1/4" margin all around the pick when you cut the felt. Then, apply a thin double sided tape on the plastic pick on both sides, again leaving a 1/4" margin of tape around the pick. Apply the felt cutouts to each side of the taped pick and press it all together firmly. Trim the felt "sandwich" all the way around to within about a 1/16th" of the plastic pick inside and "voila".....you've got yourself a true felt pick. :) It sounds like you would hope and it can be any color you want. It may shed a little and wear out with use but who cares....it works, right?

If you try this let me know what you think. BTW...if you don't have thin double sided tape, try spray glueing the felt pieces. Just let the whole thing dry solid before you hit the strings with it.

Mike
