Submitted for your collective approval is my recently bartered, outstanding condition, 1996 Squier Pro Tone P-J Bass made in the Samick (Korea) factory. These were only made from 1996 to 1998 and quickly discontinued as they were severely cutting into US Fender bass sales. Clearly, I can see why and why they are slowly but surely becoming collectible. The only non-OEM items are of course, the strings and I installed a ‘period correct‘ set of Dunlop Straploks and a Switchcraft output jack. The only ‘custom’ work I did other than a complete setup to my specs was to wire a dummy coil in series with the J pickup. Since the P pickup is already humbucking, it seemed rather ridiculous and irritating to only have half a humbucking circuit. As most know, it has to be completely one or the other with me. And no, the dummy coil made no discernable attenuation of highs to the J pickup as I calibrated the DC resistance of the dummy coil beforehand. Of note is that both the P and J pickups have OEM Alnico V magnets for polepieces. Note that a lot of what seems to be blemishes in the pictures are flash anomalies from my lousy picture taking. Enjoy!

That is a sharp looking bass indeed. I can certainly understand why that would cut into Fender P bass sales.

I have two Musicmaster basses, and I'm certain that the Squier is built better then the Fender.

Beautiful. So... Sometimes Squier basses happen to be actually better than Fender ones? Interesting.

Yes, that's a fact that some people don't want to admit and others don't like to believe even when they're shown it to be true.

I have two Musicmaster basses, one '78 Fender and one '97 Squier, similar in most ways but different in some key ones. The original Fender came with only a stock Strat 6 pole pickup and the Squier has a much better Vista Tone bass pickup. The Squier has a string through body bridge and the Fender doesn't. The Squier also has a thinner neck which is really comfortable too. And the painted headstock is just a "touch" to add a little class in my opinion. The only thing I've changed on the Squier is the plain white pickguard for a gray pearl one that I think looks killer on the black.

Although the Squier may be better in lots of ways, I had the Fender for much longer and it's still one of my "baby's" ya know. And I actually think that alot of the Squier upgrades are now available on the Squier Mustang, which based on my experience would make it a great bass for under $300

I've noticed :-) There's burning rage about this in the Squier guitars forum. Sometimes you don't get the best of deals. What can you do about it? Try to learn and do things better next time.

I need to find a shop that sells it.

Is the one in the middle a shortscale? I'd need something like that.

Yes, that one is a shortscale, all three of my basses are short scales.

You know about the Fender and Squier already, but the one in the middle is an SX Vintage Series short scale jazz bass. I got that from Rondo Music, you can find them online. It was a great out of the box bass that I bought as a backup at one time. The setup was great as is, it's solid and stays in tune well. The only downside was the original pickups were really low outputs, so those were replaced. All included I have less then $180 into a funky little bass.

You can still get those from Rondo Music but there is a new headstock style that is called Ursa that's pretty ugly in my opinion. The guitars are probably the same though so if you like that design it might be a good deal on a starter for you.

Well people just can't learn from the past and don't admit things even when they are already pretty obvious. Anyway, I definitely liked your bass Martian, I do hope I could find a guitar as sweet as that.
