I'm new here. I just bought a used Squier P bass, serial #IC041048121 for very little money. It says it's P Bass, it has the usual split pickup, but also another near the bridge. I've spent a little time setting it up and it seems to play OK, (I'm a novice and not going to pretend to know very much). I bought it to use for a practice bass as I split my life between two locations, so it doesn't need to be a great instrument. I'm play blues, primarily. I was hoping that someone who knows a lot more about these basses than I do could tell me a little about it and perhaps make some suggestions about how to set it up to get the most out of it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome.

Your bass was made in Indonesia at the Cor-Tek (Cort) factory in 2004. As you, yourself have implied, it is a 'budget' instrument but this is not to automatically imply that it is junk. Rather, there are many fine playing, fine sounding Squiers to be had.

The additional pickup near the bridge is a Jazz Bass pickup. This was added to many models in an effort to expand the electrified tonality of the instrument. A P-Bass with this additional pickup is colloquially called a, "PJ-Bass". As a matter of fact, I have a Korean made Squier "PJ-Bass", myself.

As to how to set your bass up, many find this useful:

Enjoy!

Thank you for the site. It helped a lot.

After adjusting things a little more the guitar is playing OK and sounds pretty good. Other then adjusting things, the only major thing I've done is put on new strings. The strings that were on it were light, rusted and in bad shape, so I put on a set of D'Addario medium gauge flat wounds, ECB82s, (they're what the salesman at the local music store suggested). It is quite a bit brighter, not as mellow as my Mexican Fender P Bass, but it's fine. (I'm kind of glad I don't like it better than the bass I paid a whole lot more for). I'm still playing with knobs on both the guitar and amp and I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for getting a little warmer, mellower tone?

I suppose this is an ignorant question, but am I correct in thinking that the knob nearest the neck adjusts the pickup at the neck, the middle knob the pickup at the bridge, and the knob toward the rear the tone?

Thanks for the help, Martian.

It is not an ignorant question as no one is born with the knowledge of how a PJ or a J Bass's knobs function. You are however, correct concerning the knobs' orientation/function.

If you want a warmer, mellower tone, turn down the bridge pickup's volume knob and the master tone knob to suit.

You're quite welcome!
