I will post photos as soon as I get it.

I tried my first shop today. The salesguy only offered me a black Ibanez to try. It felt good, not too heavy, but I had wanted to try a Squier too. Plus, he basically rebuffed me when I asked about shortscales, minis 3/4 or anything smaller. He tried to convince me that I had to buy it in regular size, that "it all has one size, you get the one you feel more comfortable with".

I didn't quite like that attitude. I mean, I cannot be picky or anything with a 300 euros budget, but I didn't ask for colors or any posh stuff, I just asked for a bass my size. I can compromise on other stuff, but not on the size and weight of the thing. If it doesn't feel comfortable, I won't be able to play it.

My city isn't very big, and that is the biggest shop there. I think they do what they please because they have little to no competition. So it's time to make a trip to my home town and check out the four or five music shops there. I hope I can get some offer after the holiday season ends.

On the other hand, I've been recommended thomann.de, an online shop. I am not sure about buying online... I'd like to try the stuff first, I cannot get an idea about the guitar without at least holding it. And I shudder to think about the shipping costs to Germany, should anything be amiss with what I bought. I think I'll stick to the regular shops so far. I just hope next one has at least more than one choice.

It's funny you say that because I've run into that attitude before from other musicians and store employees, that short scales don't count for some reason, or they just aren't a "real" bass. It's pretty dumb.

Most places don't even carry them if that says anything! And when you need strings get used to buying regular scale sets and cutting them down.

It certainly wouldn't be smart to pay 300 for an instrument I won't be able to play because just one chord makes me strain my hands, and that's if my fingers can do the chord. I just wonder what these people would say if you tried to sell them a car so big they couldn't handle the wheel and pedals at the same time. Because that's what they're basically trying to sell others.

However... What are the store owners thinking of? I mean, I understand an answer such as "I don't work with that size". It's your store, you do and buy and sell as you please. But, trying to convince me that shortscales do not even exist? Swearing to me that I can do with a longscale just because they refuse to sell my size? Where do these people think they live in? 1990? I can google. If you don't make enough profit from shortscales, don't sell them, but don't lie to me. It won't make me come back to that store.

Funny, of all the things I thought I'd need for a starter's kit, I had never considered pliers. Those strings don't look like they can be cut with office scissors :-)

I am considering buying at thomann.de. If I need to move to another town to get the guitar, I might as well buy it online. Problem is, I really really want to try the thing on my hands before buying. But if I don't find something good in Seville, I'll risk buying from thomann. At least four people have reported them to be very serious.
