i said i'll be quick so:
1) is the Black/ tortoise shell Jag with Duncan Designed Pickups active (as the cheaper versions are)

2) how much better is the one with Duncan Designed pickups (i don't care about looks)

3) is it better to spend £180 ($300) on a better one or £120 ($180) on a cheap one and £60 on pickups and outfitting

cheers, 14bb

I can't answer the second question, as I haven't tried one yet. But:

1) is the Black/ tortoise shell Jag with Duncan Designed Pickups active (as the cheaper versions are)

If you're referring to the first one released, then no. Its a passive bass with concentric knobs. I have watched some videos of it, and quite like how it sounds. That's just me, tho.

3) is it better to spend £180 ($300) on a better one or £120 ($180) on a cheap one and £60 on pickups and outfitting?

If you're able to afford a better one, then I say go for it. You'll automatically have a better bass instead of buying a lower quality one and modifying it to sound better. You'll practically be buying a much better instrument for almost the same price as buying a cheap one and making changes. In the long run, its a solid investment.

1. No
2. I can only speak about the two VM's I have (the J and the P )and the tone of their Duncan Designed p'ups (which I am sure are the same as on the Jag) is, IMO, awesome.
3. Spend the 180 pounds ($300) on the VM Jaguar, and it's a good bet you won't have to change anything. I haven't had to change the p'ups (or anything else) on either of my VMs.
If I had the room, I would consider the Jag, even tho I don't care for the tort Pickguard (that is easly changed, though)
