Hi,
Mind if I weigh in on the Squier vs Fender Bass? I just bought a Squier Vintage modified Jazz bass. I tried a $1000+ Jazz special bass compared to the vintage modified squier and I bought the Squier. I've played bass for over 30 years and for most of those 30 years, I've played a MIJ Squier Jazz bass. If you can find one, get it, it's da Bomb! however, If you play professionally, save your money and get a good american precision bass, if your a part timer, hobbist like me, you may want to consider comparing a squier (made is Indonesia or Korea if any are made there) verses an MIM or American Precision. I couldn't tell the difference in the vintage modified Jazz bass and the American Special Jazz bass. they sounded exactly the same on the same amp. Squiers made in Indonesia are probably made by Samick Corp for Squier. Samick makes a lot of other peoples guitars and basses for them. I have a Made in Indoesia Ibanez bass (Samick again) These guitars are definitely worth looking at. the Affinity series and most of the lower priced Squiers are made in china. Those made in Indonesia also have "Duncan Designed" pickups which are a better grade of pickup. I owned a Squier Strat (again made in Indonesia) it had the smoothest maple neck I have ever played. if it had been rosewood, I would still have it. I'm just a rosewood guy I guess. Anyway, I hope this helps you in your search for the perfect bass. I found mine and It's a Squier!

I agree 100%, the only argument I will make is, if you fall into a deal like I did on a MIM Jazz. The more I inspect it, the more I see it has more of a history than I was led to believe.

I always say, play them all. I played a bunch of VM Jazz's before I bought one, never regretted it.

The truth ^^ right here...Always try a bunch before biting the bullet on the one, unless the one is the only one and it sounds 'right' to you.

I cannot say it enuff, would you prefer a used Caddilac or a new Hyundai? if you arent in any rush do yourself some favor and go to the used sections and play some basses, you could go every week and never see anything you like but oneday you can walk in and find a gem being tagged for sale no-one else saw yet.
Last year I found a MIM p-bass from 1992,it was dead nutz mint with all the regular up-grades complete with a flamed out neck(not very common in the mex line)price-tag of 300.00$ w/hardshell case,I put deposite down and in 2 weeks went back to pay for it there was a used 2003 American P-bass used,it looked like it just came off the assembly line it was that perfect(still had orig. strings and p/gaurd)and for only 125.00$ more than the Mex,if I waited one day or went one day sooner it would NEVER have still been there,my point is you wont know whats out there untill you try to find it,its worth it sometimes, sometimes its not.
If you dont find what you like buy the best new one you can get,and haggle they CAN haggle even though nthey act like they cannot the can and believe me they wont offer to do it,ASK!

All good advice. I tried that route. I just never got lucky. I did just happen to walk into a small store and there was my Jazz hanging there. I lucked out on it and I really am satisfied with my Precision. I played at least six Squier VM Jazz basses before I bought one.

Honestly, the only minus with the VM was it's finish. My Precision is natural and the VM is kind of natural. I needed some color. I've always been a sucker for sunburst.

Good luck. After all this you'll probably post tomorrow and tell us how you found a bass and got it for a song.

From my perspective, its all up to what you personally want. You could buy either and be satisfied, or buy both and be satisfied. I myself own a Squier and two (soon to be three) Fenders, and it plays just as well. I do intend to sell it soon in favor of another Squier, so hopefully that will show just how good some of the current Squiers are, namely the VM and CV series.
