I was wondering if there were any recommended mods. This is my first Bass, and really my first stringed instrument ( I play tenor sax  ) I've only had it for a little while, so I'm not very acquainted with this bass, anyway. I've heard that squier pickups are low quality, so I'm probably going to replace those. Is there anything else recomended? Also, are alternate pickguards available for purchase? I would really prefer a gold-colored or blue one to the generic-loking white one. Even black would be nice.

Don't be so anxious to upgrade it quite yet. Get it professionally setup first, try different strings, then play it for a good while before you decide to do any mods. Whether the pickups are good or not is mostly a matter of personal preference, what may sound good to you may not sound good to someone else and vice versa. Don't expect new pickups or hardware to magically turn your bass into the best bass ever. You may spend a bunch of money for modifications and find out it doesn't sound or play any better than when you bought it. Wait until you have a good amount of playing time under your belt before you go changing stuff.

Cosmetic changes like Pickguard swaps are a different story, that doesn't affect the function of the bass, just how it looks. You can get pickguards at any number of online sources, the problem with Squiers is they're not always compatible with Fender style aftermarket PGs, and may require some work on your part to get them to fit. There are websites where you can get PGs for Squiers, but you either have to send them a tracing of your PG or the PG itself.

I own a nice older Affinity P- bass from about 1997 or so and it's sweet.

The neck is to die for and the body is solid and without a scratch or buckle rub anywhere!

The only thing I did was install a set of ROTO77s flats and a switch with an additional .1uF cap for adding to the tone. I always thought it was a little 'glassy' for tone - but that's my obsession and may not be yours.

Oh - and a thumb rest!

After this pix was taken I had the E & A p'up die and I got a set of Peavey p'ups for it.

This is a front-of-the-line player and it's smoothness and voice is very acceptable to even the nastiest gear snob.

Replace thing to fix it, sure.

Replace things to upgrade it? Why? It's cool like it is.

This is good advice.

Only thing I'd recommend is new strings. Don't buy Fender strings, though. They're very low quality. Buy yourself some D'Addarios. The rest should be fine, I love my P-Bass (same kind as yours)! :)
