O.k., we all admit our VM's are up there with our all time favorite basses. After reading posts about how many issues "real" jazz basses have, it just makes me happier to own one of these.

As far as quality goes, I played six of these at different times before buying, a decision I never regretted. and they all were better than good. The only adjustment I made was to lower the strings, there were no other issues.

I've not have any issues with any new Jazz basses I've bought in the past. I think most of the issues has been setting up the D or G strings on the bridge. Ox, I've always bought at a store. I know some of you guys out there buy on line, all fine by me. I like to see and play the bass I'm buying. Not judging by any means. My VM had to get the neck adjusted when I bought it, fine by me, I'm the 1st owner. To this day, no issues. My '99 had a bad tuner key, so a good excuse to get the Schaller ones :D Otherwise I've been lucky with brand F - not Fernandes, Fender

Yeah, I suppose maybe I got lucky with mine. Both my VM J and P were teriffic right out of the box.
I had gotten the VM Jazz in July, and I thought OK, I'm done buying basses, I have an MIA Jazz, and now this Squier as a backup that are both great basses. Then in August, Squier announces the new amber P-bass, and I'm like, "Oh, crap!". I had a '78 Fender P-bass a few years back that had a natural finish that had aged to the same shade as the amber on the Squier, along with a black PG. I loved that look. The only real difference was the Fender had a rosewood board. It was a great bass, but I always wished it had a maple neck. I had to sell it a few years ago to pay bills, and I was really sad to see it go. And then Squier has to go and release a model that would, in a way, return my favorite bass ever to me in the exact configuration I had always wanted. I dithered back and forth for a while whether or not to buy one, since I really didn't have the room for any more instruments (I had just bought an SX bass out of curiosity) and for all practical purposes I didn't really need another. Well, Less than a week after Musician's Friend put them on their website, I had one on order.
I'm weak-willed I guess.
But I must say, I'm really happy I did, I like it even better than the VM Jazz. (Turns out I'm more of a P-bass guy!)
One thing I keep thinking is, "Why couldn't they have had basses like this when I was starting out?"

For so many of us saying how good Squier quality has become, it might be a little more than luck. Whatever they're doing in Indonesia or wherever, I'm impressed.

One thing I've learned, Never say never, :) Just about the time you do, something shiny catches your attention, for me it was my VM.

I'm more of a P Bass guy too but, I do like my Jazz for a lot of different styles and it's a great back-up. I'm amazed at the tones it will produce. It won't hit the low end like my Precision but it does come close.

Hey Bats, do you remember Kay basses?

I'm a guitar guy for years and truly never even plugged in a bass my whole life until my son started taking lessons on the double bass. Anyway, I eyebald VM Jazz at GC and was blown away by how cool a guitar it is! Quality is as good as any MIM, MIJ or HW1 Strat/Tele I have owned over the years. I love noodling around on this thing - fun as hell! While I cannot compare to any other basses out there for my lack of experience - this one MADE me want to play bass! Now I find myself looking at all the other nice Squier basses.... CV 50s, VM fretless, Pbasses!!!!! Uh oh  .

Ox I think it started with the Koreans losing the bid to produce the next Squier lines to Indonesia and China, which didn't come out bad for us, the consumers.

I remember the name, never actually seen or played one. I'm not sure, but I think they strictly make double basses now, don't they?

You make a great point here. While I have seen some scary older Chinese Squiers and on some of the current Bullet Strats, the quality is lacking, but the two indonesian Squiers I have are well put together - certainly as nice as or better than the 90s Korean Squiers I've seen. My VM Jazz is very, very nice and the CV Squiers I have seen and played are beautiful!

Crazy right CB...just a few yrs a go, you can look at Ibanez lines, any thing that's not CIJ Ibby that is a great finish product, chances are it's made in Korea. The ones in the lower lines are Chinese made. Now the Indonesians got 'em too with the Ibanez. As a matter of fact, my BTB was Korean made, the finish was superb, the quality was also excellent. I don't know what happened, either quality went down, or the basic need to keep price level I guess, the labor went up in Korea.

As far as Kay basses, I believe you're right.

See what I mean about shiny things catching our attention?

The enchanted corner of my gameroom is getting crowded. Wife wants to buy new furniture , nothing really wrong with what is here, it's comfortable.

Point is, all she wants to buy is a new couch and not a loveseat, that will make more room for me to add to my collection.

Hmmm, I do have a spare stand. Next on my list will be a fretless bass, I tried the Squier and really wasn't taken by it. A black American Standard with a black pickguard will fit in well.

I'm wondering why the "working pros" haven't made any comments here lately. It gets me that someone has the b__ls to look down their noses at Squiers.

That should get a rise.

I realise this may not be news to everyone, but it's something that I think bears repeating as I'm still hearing this rumor about the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass.
NO, THE INLAYS ON THE SQUIER VINTAGE MODIFIED JAZZ BASS ARE NOT PAINTED ON, THEY ARE REAL HONEST TO GOSH INLAYS!
Sorry for yelling, it's just that some people still think the markers are painted on and insist on spreading this misinformation.
We return you now to your regularly scheduled programming.

Actually, over on TalkBass, I have seen a number of pros talking about how they love to gig with ther Squiers, some have even put up pics, and not a few were VM Jazzes. I guesss the pros over at TB have more "huevos" than those that hang out here.. (ahem)

Good one bats.

A while back one of the "elite" came on and really railed on Squier basses. Brother Dave and I both gave him our points of view for which he had no reply.

I'll try to find it and post it here.

Some news. If I read this right, looks like Squier will be releasing a Sunburst VM Jazz soon.
Check out the photos on the Musician's Friend listing here
http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com ... sku=519639

Notice it's not given as an option yet, and supposedly some people have called MF and were told the Sunburst VM J is "discontinued" (How can you discontinue a model that has never existed?) and it hasn't been announced by Squier yet. But, some of you may remember info and pics about the the Squier Jag had been released about a month or so before the official announcement. The thing is, MF has done this before, prematurely listed an item with incorrect info or missing options, only to be taken down for a couple of days, then relisted with the correct information. So, I think sometime in the next week or two, you will be able to get a VM Jazz in a sunburst finish. Cool, huh?
