Never been much of a fan of Fender strings, rounds or flats. They just feel cheap and the tone leaves me kinda "meh".

1st set of replacement strings I put on the VM was the stainless flats. I like the way they sounded, but it doesn't fit the type of music I play. So when it was time to replace them, I went to the stainless rounds again.

to me flats were ok, but the thumpin the strings felt so empty to me, i like the snap of the flats though... dull yet sweet and woody..

+1 on the Fender strings, Bat. And they don't last. To me, flats are more of a P-Bass thing. I have a set of d'Addario Chrome flats on mine at the moment, and all those Jamerson and Harvey Brooks tones are just there - yummy! And with a bit of EQ they can bite, too.

Right now I have GHS Precision flats on both my VM J and VM P, I may go back to Dean Markley Blue Steels on the Jazz, It just seems better to me for the Jazz to have rounds on it and to keep the flats on the Precision.

Precisely, Bat. I think I'll stick to flats on the P-Bass, though I might well give Rotosound RS77LD's a try next time.

So I'm told - I think Rotosound generally are a little brighter than their d'Addario equivalents. We'll have to see  The wrap being monel, which is effectively corrosion-proof (rather than nickel or steel) they're also meant to last exceptionally well. If that's true, then they're a real bargain.

:P - Evidently not to quite the same degree as monel, PJB: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monel

To be honest, I did think that just about SS just as I posted that last comment. Checking it out, I also find some people suggest that SS flats are in fact brighter in sound than monel. Well, I guess I'll just have to try 'em. This string thing can get expensive

Interesting reading...I do know Steve Harris uses the Roto Flats (he's got his own sig series strings and being British, he signed with Roto ;) ) and loves the SS flats due to it's brighter sound. He loves flats, the few metal artist that uses flats.

Well, I like flats on my VM Squiers as they give me that old school R+B and Blues sound I want. How they sound slapping and popping is irrelevant to me, as I do neither.

I'm only a fan of the Flats on how they feel, but SS rounds for actual playing for me. I like the brightness.
