Nice buy! My friend bought one and it's just as sweet as his Aerodyne.

Hey Mark. I re-wired my jazz bass last night to match the official Squier diagram. I had to fight with one of the volume pots because the solder wouldn't stick. Weird. Anyway, I noticed two things after I was finished with the wiring: 1) I have a better range of volume with both volume controls, and 2) I get the humbucking effect when both volume pots are at the same level. Very cool.

Unfortunately, I still have the buzzing unless I turn my tone pot all the way down. So, my next step will be to take my guitar and amp to another location, like a friend's house. In other words, I'm going to see if something in my house is causing the problem. If my gear behaves away from home, then at least I know where to look for the issue. If the gear doesn't sound right, I'll try other amps to see if that takes care of the issue.

This has been by far one of the best basses I have ever played. Once I got the action where I wanted it (dead flat and super low) I was even more impressed by the sound and articulation. The ebonal neck is the perfect canvas for pinch/pressed harmonics. And the "muah" factor is dripping with sex appeal. After adding the JZ-3 preamp this bass really came alive. Looking forward to purchasing another J-Bass to add to my collection.I am drooling over the Deluxe Jazz Bass® V Active (5-String) . Lovely instrument!
I have done only a couple of mods to my VMJBF...added some Strap Loks and the JZ-3 preamp. I will be adding the Bad $@! ll next.
Some of the mods being showed off on this forum are amazing! The standout is the one by Markbass 4444...simply beautiful results and after the relic mod was completed I could not get enough of it! A wonderful piece of work Mark, truly.

Meshica7, Thanks for the kind words,... I love the EQ on the JZ3 audere! BTW you wont be sorry with the Deluxe Jazz Bass® V Active (5-String), this bass is amazing, the feel, the quality and the sound! No dead notes due to it's thick v string heavy duty neck...... :)

Good to know...
I hear rumors that this bass is also available in black and antique white?
Someone please verify...A white one would look killer!

All right... here's the latest on my buzzing and noise issues regarding my Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass.

First, I replaced my cable with a DiMarzio Instrument Cable. It didn't solve the buzzing issue, but it boosted the output and depth of the sound. Plus, the cable is quite solid... very nice.

Second, I did a ton of research about single coil pickups and 60Hz cycle interference. I finally decided to replace the Duncan Designed pickups with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups. According to all of the reviews that I read, the DiMarzios are exceptionally quiet humbuckers that retain the jazz bass sound. Plus, they are very reasonably priced (I payed $99 for a pair).

I installed the new pickups and really like the punch that they provide. The lows are deeper and the highs are more pronounced. Very nice. Now then, what I can't believe is that the annoying buzzing still exists! I was really looking forward to enjoying the better sound without the noise.

I verified that all the wiring is correct, all grounds are in place, etc. I found a note on DiMarzio's website that says the Ultra Jazz pickups only cancel noise in the 60Hz and lower frequencies. Sigh.

I'm at my wits end. I'm even considering line conditioning at this point, but don't know if that would even help. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

After extensive reading, browsing guitar forums, and having discussions with co-workers with electronics degrees, I finally located a website that outlined in detail the noise problems that most guitar players experience and the resolutions that are available. GuitarNuts.com is a great resource for any guitar player experiencing interference or noise. Even though I didn't find documentation that was an exact match for my guitar, I did find documentation that was close enough. Obviously, the theories still applied, so I had to simply adjust for my situation.

I ended up shielding and completely rewiring my bass guitar. It was a lengthy process (about four hours), as I wanted to make sure the job turned out right, but it was worth the time spent. From a materials standpoint, I spent less than $30: $13 on copper foil tape with a conductive adhesive (available at StewMac.com), $7 on 20-gauge wire, $3 on a pack of ring terminals, $5 on solder, and $1 on small wood screws. I already had everything else I would need: a soldering iron, electrical tape, wire cutters, and a multi-meter.

After following the directions and implementing the solution, I am now enjoying a totally quiet playing experience. I can finally hear the notes in all their glory. As a matter of fact, because the noise has been eliminated, the signal strength from my pickups has increased, thus producing a broader range of sounds and much better presence. Simply put, the signals from my guitar are no longer being weakened by interference. I thought the guitar sounded great before… now it sounds incredible!

The main things that I learned from this experience are that it is very important to separate the signal grounds from the equipment grounds, to eliminate ground loops, and to maintain a solid and grounded shield around the controls and wiring. It makes all the difference!

I’ve attached a couple of schematic images that show the wiring before I did any work on the guitar, as well as one that shows the end result.

So I've wanted a fretless to mess around with and change things up a bit from my fretted jazz. The only problem is I'm left handed :( I was wondering if they would be able to make a left handed version of this bass if I special ordered it? Or do they already make a left handed version?

Thanks, David
