I also haven't tried fitting a PG - they're not cheap so I too don't wanna mess about :(

I've tried cutting a PG before - it didn't go well. With access to a bandsaw you could do a good job of it though. Either that or sand it down but that would take a while depending on the thickness and would be a bit wobbly.

I will get a PG for mine sooner or later however :)

I was looking for a replacement pick guard for my VM, nothing off the Fender fits properly. The holes for the screws won't line up. The thing with the fretless is that it has never been drilled for a pickguard. If you have it already, test fit it, w/o drilling off course, then tell us if it fits... :)

Well I actually have a geddy lee jazz bass that i've changed pickguards on with a fender pickguard, so I took the original pickguard from that and tried putting it on the VM fretless, but the pickguard extends a little bit over the control plate. Based on that i'm afraid to order anything online.

Warmoth has pickguards for a body size they call a "dinky J"...i'm wondering if that would fit...how hard is it to adjust the pickguard to the bass (cutting it)?

I went on this site, www.wdmusic.com off of www.pickguards.com which I think are one of the same company, the sales rep/tech told me to trace the pg I have now and send it to them. They'll call and tell me how much it's going to cost. I've gotten the tracing and it's in the envelope but I don't know if I want to spend the money. The one I want is $40, so when they cut it special for me there will be extra cost for a custom job...I'm guessing it'll be $5 - $10 more for the one I want.

Ally, they also have this site for the UK too, I know you're in Scottland, so maybe the pricing would be a little diff't(?)

funny thing is i have emailed WD music before asking about a custom PG for my Jazz bass (it has an odd hole pattern for a one piece J bass PG which I've converted to the standard CP and PG arrangement) and they quoted me £40 for one made from a tracing inc P+P if I remember correctly.

So it'd equate $80...which is a lot. :|

My best friend got his doctorate in B'ham, England. He's told me the difference living in England and the US is the money, the #'s the same but the value of the Pound is outrageous - esp now how the $ is so weak.

I ALSO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE VINTAGE MOD FRETLESS. I VE
HAD FENDER JAZZ FRETLESS BASSES AND A P BASS FRETLESS
BUT HAVE BEEN PLAYING MY AMERICAN ACTIVE JAZZ DELUXE
FRETTED FOR ABOUT 10 YRS. (I RECENTLY REFRETTED IT AND
WOULDN T TRADE IT FOR THE WORLD. HOWEVER, I VE BEEN
REALLY WANTING TO GET BACK TO MY FRETLESS PLAYING.
I M IN A BLUES,SOUL,FUNK STYLE BAND AND THE FRETLESS
WOULD COME IN HANDY MUCH OF THE TIME. I DIDN T REALLY
WANT TO GO AN ARM AND LEG FOR ONE THOUGH. I CONSIDERED
GOIN WITH A STEW MAC PUT TOGETHER JOB, BUT THAT REALLY
ADDS UP AFTER HARDWARE,PICKUPS ETC.. THEN I RAN INTO
THE VINTAGE MODIFIED, AND WOW...IT LOOKS GREAT, PLAYS
VERY WELL, SOUNDS GOOD, AND VALUE...YEAAA !
BUT WHEN I GOT IT HOME AND PLAYED IT AWHILE, I THEN PLUGGED
IN MY AMERICAN ACTIVE JAZZ (FRETTED) AND REALIZED, I D NEED
TO UPGRADE THE PUPS SO THAT THERE ISN T SO MUCH OF A
DIFFERENCE IN VOLUME AND CLARITY.
SO MY QUESTION TO YOU ALL IS: WHAT S A GOOD PICK UP
REPLACEMENT FOR THIS FRETTLESS SQUIRE? DO I GO WITH
NOISELESS JAZZ PUPS TO COMPARE WITH MY OTHER BASS, OR
IS THERE A "WARMER" PICK UP THAT WOULD GO GOOD WITH
A FRETLESS? I DIG THE JACO SOUND , BUT JUST DON T KNOW IF
A STANDARD PICK UP WILL BE HOT ENOUGH.
ANY IDEAS?

Most people on here would suggest sticking to Fender Noiseless or Custom shop pups. I prefer EMG myself, which I'm getting soon. Duncans are good too. Custom shop have a nice sound (great sound really). I've been happy with the EMG's I have on my '87 Fender. Happy hunting and stop shouting would you

Nordstrands or lindy Fralins.

OR some nice fender ones :)

Personally I'd go for the Fralins.

I've not played or heard of any bass with these LF pu's. Are they that good? What kind of sound are they?

They're very akin to vintage pre CBS Fender PUPs, the best thing about them though, IMO, is you can spec them as you like and have them wound to your specs.

Generally they're just well priced and give excellent tone. But each to their own, I'm not saying they're any better than Fender or any other make of PUPs.

Not in a million years I thought you were saying they're better than any other make, I just never heard the sound from this p/u.

That's pretty cool to get "your own custom" sound by specing it your self. I've been happy with my EMG's and thinking of putting 'em on my VM this summer -- EMG HZ.

Thanks again Ally. :D

Awesome! Lemme knows how it turns out, I'm open to suggestions on mods. I'm in the process of lacquering the headstock right now! I miss playing it :(

I changed the Jazz bass lettering to the other 70s style (which I prefer hugely), but kept the Squier logo obviously! Looks sweet, but I've had some mess ups (first timer) so lots of sanding and starting again and such but I think I got it ok this time!
:)

This is the best part of owning a Squier product, you can customize how ever you want without any of the purist going nuts on you for "ruining" a good bass. Not that I care from my sig...lol Show us some pix when you're done.

All,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the great comments on this Bass. After reading so many great things about it I decided have my family get me one for father's day. What a great instrument. I am having a hard time putting it down.
Thanks again.
