Can someone tell me the difference in the different series of Squier basses. For example the Affinity series and the Standard series. Are all Squier basses the same, do they sound different, are they made of different woods, what? They all seem to look the same.

My niece got an Affinity Strat a couple years ago for Christmas. Nicely balanced. The frets were put in very well. The alder body is slightly thinner than the usual. Best guitar out there for the price.

If your interested in collectability the early "JV" Squiers are rare and kinda hot these days. I think the newer Classic Vibe Squiers are as nice as any Fender.

The late-80's Squier II's are not so hot IMO.

Your best research could be done on Ebay. The specs are also on this site.

Thanks for the info. But it doesn't answer my question.

Different woods...different factories. The Strats sound like Strats. Teles like teles. Same goes for the basses. I think you get more tone most of the time with the Fenders. You get what you pay for (with the exception of the CV's). The focus is more toward learning your instrument at the Squier price range.

I mentioned the best of the series, along with the worst. A more specific answer would be in the specs.

the different "series" is basically the price/quality level.. kind of like the Fender Standard Jazz vs. American Standard Jazz.
nowadays, the Squiers have gotten a LOT better, but they still have different "levels" as far as the manufacturing goes. from "highest" to "lowest" quality (i use quotations because most of this is subjective) it tends to go like this:

1. Vintage Modified
2. Classic Vibe
3. Standard
4. Affinity

in all honesty, though, it is completely up to the bassist. i tend to not like the CV series, but i'm fine with the Affinity, and i love the VM Jazz... it just comes down to preference.

Fixed that for you. You had them backwards. VM's are $279 to $299, CV's are $350. Classic Vibe is considered Squier's top line.

Well, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have two VM's, the Jazz and the amber P-bass, and I love them both. Great basses.

How do you find the amber VM P-Bass, Bathead? I've quite fancied one since they came out, but I don't know anyone personally with one, and none of the music shops around Dorset have them in stock as far as I can see. All maple sounds very bright to me, though - too bright for a P-Bass? (My favourite is my own CIJ Fender with US Vintage pup set, so you can see where my tastes lie 8) )

PVT, Bat's got a review on one of the thread here day after he got it. Pretty good review, with pix, good thing cuz my ADD don't let me read too much...J/k, not meant to poke fun on anyone with ADHD. I've not played one yet, but Zod did yesterday, he didn't find it as nice as the review from Bat. I think with most basses, you gotta ck it out yourself, find the 'right' one.

I got mine online at Musician's Friend for $279 and free shipping. It's not too bright at all, IMO, it has the classic vintage P-bass tone. The body wood is actually designated "Soft Maple", I've heard from some that it's a bit mellower than regular maple. I dunno, I'm not all that much of a believer in the tonewood concept. All I can tell you is that it doesn't appear to brighten up the tone any.

So, either Zod was very unlucky, or I was very lucky, take your pick. Although I must say, owing to my situation, I have to order gear online, sight unseen, that I have indeed been VERY lucky, all 4 basses (and one guitar) I have bought online are excellent instruments that I am very happy with (even the cheaper ones!). I will say, if you can, you really need to try these things out before you buy, it's really the safest way.
BTW, thanks for the compliment on my review.

Yo Bat, if it's good it's good. I quite enjoy the review, jokes about ADHD aside ;)

Thank you, both!

Bat, your review and your comments here are really helpful. That's exactly the kind of info I was hoping for. Looks like my concerns are unfounded - and in any case those Duncan P-Bass sets sound delicious, from the other ones I've heard.

PJB, I agree with you about hands-on, however. While I confess I've bought 2 amps online untried (1 turned out slightly disappointing, and 1 just right) and no end of stomp boxes and such, I've never bought an actual instrument I hadn't played. What I might do is see if my usual music shop, where they know me well (too well - I can't drop in for a set of strings without they want me to try something new they've just got in!) will order me one, sale or return. That way, I can try it without the hassle of trying to return it or resell it if it's not right.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Sounds like a plan. Good luck! Here's hoping you get a good one like I did.
