And here we go ...

I actually got this yesterday, been busy fooling around with it.
First up, some pics:

A few hours old, with straplocks and a bridge cover with mute added and new GHS Precision flats

Well, right out of the box I could tell this was a keeper. Fit and finish is excellent, of the four basses I now own it ranks second only to my MIA Fender Jazz in build quality, and just beats out my Squier VM J by a small margin. Everything is nice and tight and straight and square.
Setup was pretty good, it will get better after I tweak it a bit. Plays real nice, it has the nice fat P-bass neck I like.
With the stock rounds, it sounded pretty good, sounded even better once I changed the strings to GHS Precison Flats and added a mute.
Tuners on my VM J were a little loose when changing strings (not a big deal, It stills holds a tuning) but these are better, nice and smooth, not loose at all. Bridge seems typical for a Squier, Also not a bad thing.
Neck is nicely done, I like the satin finish, it's very smooth, smoother even than the one on my VM J, fretwork is good, fret ends are nicely dressed, Neck body join is about as tight as it gets.
Pickup is a Duncan designed Split-coil P type pickup, it has that deep warm punchy tone you would come to expect from a proper P-bass. Controls operate smoothly. There was a bit of a scratchiness on the tone control at one point, but it disappeared quickly and hasn't come back yet.
One final note, before I conclude this, the finish is a nice deep amber, and it is noticeably darker than the natural finish on the VM J, with some really nice graining. With the black pickguard it reminds me of my '78 Fender P-bass I had to sell a couple of years back (except that one had a rosewood board) That was a gorgeous bass, and this one with the maple board, IMO, is even moreso. Beautiful.
I will admit, after hearing some not so-favorable reviews of the other new Squier basses, I was a little trepidatious,(sp?) but those fears have been laid aside. This is a great bass, I am happy I got it. This is gonna be fun.
(PS - there will be absolutely NO modding of this bass, It doesn't need it one bit.)
Any questions?

Yes, it is Indonesian. And yes, technically speaking I have modded it, but I don't count cosmetic changes as "true" mods, I only count those things that somehow alter the basic functionality (like pickup and hardware swaps) as proper mods. That may be splitting hairs, but ... well, you know.

Great looking bass, Bathead!

I just wanted to make sure of one thing. You did or did not add the bridge cover?

Bathead.... I saw your post of this bass review over on the talkbass forum.
These are very nice basses.
I should have my '77 VM Jazz tomorrow.
I'll post my thoughts on it here & also TB after I get a chance to give it a good going over.

Congrats on a nice new bass!

Yes, I added the bridge cover. I also mounted a piece of weather stripping on the underside of the cover as a mute. Makes it nice and thumpy.

Not splitting hairs, I agree with you on mods, are true hardware like pups, bridges, tuners. Very nice bass!!

Congrats Bats, it's always exciting to buy a new bass or anything for that matter.

I have no doubt it will be as good as your Jazz. I have a FSR Precision that has a natural finish, seem I can't get away from the color.

Anxious to see the pics.

Well, it's certainly better looking. But as far as it being a better wood over all, that's debatable. I think Agathis gets an unecessarily bad rap.

Very nice, excellent choice. I know how much I like my VM Jazz, considering you already have a Jazz and rate this one higher, I have to get out and try one, which isn't good.

Should I stop posting for an extended period of time, either I'm dead or severely injured because Wifey beat me with a new bass :D.

At least the bass will hold up well.
