Depends which one the op got. Some of them are very questionable, but some are good(even great for the money).

I totally agree to that statement. My Vintage Modified Precision Bass plays well, considering that it's a Squier. Only complaints are the loose strings (but that should be fixable from changing the light strings to a heavier gauge), and the fact that the string loosen, thus me having to tune everytime i pick it up. But hey those aren't things which make me dislike my bass at all. Cheers to quality Squiers!

Loose strings? I've never heard of such a thing. This is from factory, or after you put new strings on it?

I've had my Squire Percision for about 11 years now - it sounds great to me! I've played it at the TLA in Philly and CBGB'S in NYC - never had a problem.
I recently replaced the original machine heads with Grovers and changed to Ernie Ball mediums because I am joining a cover act at the end of the summer - haven't played in a while and wanted to go easy on my fingers.

I'm a lefty so I'm glad I finally found something I liked. I wanted to check out a Carver but I couldn't find one (lefty) on the East Coast. I called the factory and they were like "no you have to come here" - screw that - I picked up the Squire and it's been with me ever since!

The affinity Squier bass is a really good bass, It has no protective clear coat on the body which makes the tone sing!!! But the down side is it can get scratched easily..... the neck and body has a truer body to neck (wood on wood) connection (no paint)Image
excellent sustain... the affinity j bass had potential.

It has an alder body (found on MIM's and MIA's) but the electronics and hardware could be improved......

the stock pickups was replaced with a Vintage Noiseless Fender.

The cheap affinity tuners is obviously not the best but I'm glad it still have the traditional clover-shape keys....

After I satisfied my J-Bass craving, I started longing for that classic Jamerson "Motown" sound. I was prepared to wait until I scraped together enough cash for a MIM Standard, but on a whim I picked up the 70's Modified P-Bass. Not only do I love the Olympic white finish against the black pick guard, the Duncan Designed pickups are totally sweet, and the lightweight is a nice change from the heavy ash body on my J-Bass. The only thing I want to change is the screws on the pick guard: I think black screws would look awesome!

Very true -- I have an 83 MIJ P that is equal in playability to my 96 MIA fretless P. The construction quality and hardware are very close and even the electronics are decent. This is a main bass quality instrument, Squire or not.

But I've tried Squires that I wouldn't even consider as an emergency backup or just to leave at a friend's house for the occasional impromptu jam. Overall, I'd say that the range of quality on a Squire varies but a lot more than on the Fender branded series.

Still, if you're willing to hunt the right Squire down, you get a great guitar at a great price.

I'm a P-Bass Special user and I have to say it sounds just great. It's punchy, and overall gives a solid experience both while playing and listening. The only problem is that -IMO- both pickups should be turned up while playing since both are needed for the good sound otherwise it's just hum. At least for me.

The affinity J bass that I got is very comparable to my 3 other MIM Fender Jazz in terms of feel and tone (after the bass was properly set up). The Neck quality and hardware is where the difference starts.... the neck playability is so good (when properly set up) it's like any other Jazz bass that I have tried but it feels like the head stock needs more mass, the tuners are so light compared to a standard jazz, .... there are these little details that still makes my MIM's better but I would 100% gig with this bass
Image
The Alder wood is heavier and very solid compared to my Agathis Vintage Modified Fretless.
the craftsmanship of the body is excellent just like my other MIM standard jazz (the shape and thickness). The downsides are the hardware and electronics (knobs, pickups, tuners) but hey it's under $200 bucks!
Every bass is made differently so if you are interested to get a Squier, I suggest try and play as many bass as you can, just like they say....Some of them are very questionable, but some are good (even great for the money)...... and....... the range of quality on a Squire varies... :D

Ok, I have been playing an acoustic bass for about 2 years of and on and decided I needed another electric in the $200 range. I went to Guitar Center and (thought) I had picked up a MIM Jazz bass and starting playing around on it. Sounds great, I'm into the Motown stuff right now, and it was the best sound that I ever heard from MY fingers (WOW). So, then I decided to play a $1100 P bass. Was pretty much the same sound, but I couldn't tell the difference that much. So I went back to what I thought was a MIM Fender; turned out to be a Squire Affinity Jazz. Long story short, BEST $194 I ever spent!!!!! This thing is the BOMB!!! :)

Money well spent, congrats on your purchase! :) Same here, I mean, it plays well, it sounds right, I'm planning to buy another P-Bass in a short while and customize it a bit but until then I cannot think of any other basses to play than my beloved P Special.
