The Jazz bass has 2 single coil pick-ups.
The Precision has 1 split pick-up.
The Jazz has a narrower neck.
The P neck is a little beefier.
The overall tone of the Jazz has more treble output than the P, due to the bridge position pick-up.
Precision tone is boomier than the Jazz.
The body shapes are slightly different.
Both are fine basses.

If you are looking to Squire look at their VM (Vintage Modified) or CV (Classic VIbe) lines.
They are both very good instruments at the upper end of the Squire lines.

The Affinity line is at the low end of their products.

Just to confuse things other lines include Squire Standard and Squire Artist, Squire Deluxe and Squire Modern..

Ok, thanks.
I used to play the bass, but not anymore. I'm going to start again, that's why I wanted to bought that first, and change it later.

What do you think?

It might be more cost efficient to at least get a Vintage Modified model, an Affinity is likely to need some modification to make it a decent instrument. The Affinity line's quality is more hit or miss than the VM or CV lines.

You could do that, that's what a lot of folks do. Then again a lot of folks find out after getting a Squier, they may not want to bother getting a "better" (i.e., more expensive) bass, as they may find their Squiers to be more than up to the task of being their main instrument.

i have a friend who uses Squier Standard Jazz Bass as his main axe during a live gig... well during a live it's really hard to notice esp the sound and the settings... unless you go studio recording that's when you'll need the good quality tools
