I have to agree with the post above. It is pure snobbery - nothing more. Sure Fenders do tend to have a bit more quality, and Squiers may be hit and miss over the years. But that is not to say that all Squiers are bad or that you can judge the quality by what is on the headstock alone. Heck - I have seen (and played) some pretty poopy Fendrs over the years.

Regarding jarring comments: I have had the oposite happen with me and my cheep-o bottom of the bucket Squire II Percision. - I was in a well known studio here in Portland Oregon recently where I left my equipment there overnight. The owner of the studio came in very early the next morning to do a little trouble shooting. I came in later in the morning and found him toying with my bass. (I did not mind - people want to play with toys when they are lying arround). He told me that for being a Squier, it sure was one of the nicest basses he has played in a while. He also said that it played like a well worn 70's era precesion!

I was floored by his coments since the man has owned the studio since 1981 and has surely seen everything over the years.

I have received other coments on it as well. The most notiable kudo I had ever received was from another producer/sound engineer out of the Bay Area (Woodacre to be exact). He said the instrument played very well, but it is far far more than that. It is all about the man behind the instrument and the finess that goes into playing the instrument (not that he was saying that I am the best bass player in the world) but he was right about the finess part.

Back to the Fender fan-boys poo pooing Squier, it is just a snoby status thing they feel that somehow, by spending the extra money that they are entitled trash talk anyone who does not make the kind of money (or save the kind of money) that they do. I know several people around town that do not have much talent, but have day jobs that allow them to buy expensive toys. But once they plug in and turn it up, I just want to plug my ears.

All I know is that for the $150 my mother spent on it back in the early 90's -you could not tear it out of my hands. I have been playing it ever since, and I think my mother is very happy to see that it was a worth while investment.

hmm how about removing the logo on both Squier and Fender and let them try to hear the difference..some guys couldn't tell, but anyways in terms of sound comparison... there is a slight, very very slight difference, wood tone i guess.. esp the Classic Vibe, which would sound close, but you can really hear its dullness compared to the Fenders

When playing just the instrument through an amp with no effects, that would be a great test. However, with todays trends in some genres tending to be saturated with effects, I would say one would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Another good test would be to test several versions of the same model, from the same brand - be it fender vs fender or squier vs squier and see if there are differences. I am sure there would be.

I've got something to throw into the discussion. As well as my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, I have a Fender Special Run Precision, natural finish, ash body , tortise pickguard. It's a great bass.

When I got my Jazz, I found out the Duncan designed pickups on the Squier were twice as powerful as the one on my "real" Fender. The Precision sounds great but, I have my gain on my amp at 3 for the Jazz and 8 for the Squier. I run through a Tech21 Sansamp Bassdriver, I've got to jack the Level to get the same volume. I find the Jazz a lot more versatile than the Precision. while I use Rotosound flats on the Precision and round wound Rotosounds on the Jazz, it still out performs the Precision as far as flexibility.

Point is, if you're happy with what you play, who has the right to try and convince you otherwise. All that matters is, whether you walk off stage or come away from a practice and are satisfied, that's what counts.

Thump on.

Oxfan: You make an excelent point. What someone else thinks about my instrument bares absolutely no relevance to my own satisfaction from what I am able to get out of my instrument.

On 8-7-10 I am going to gig my classic vibe at an outdoor gig for about a thousand folks. So I am gonna represent Bathead cause I like you dig this Squier line> Great looks Great tone Great thump. We are an up and coming contemporary christian rock band. I roll with and play with very talented musicians of which I am humbled to play with and they all like the sound and bottom that I bring to the game. I like 70's rock Motown and the John Mayer trio. Thats the sound I emulate and this Squier adds so much to me as a player. Had been searchin for the right bass and right tone right weight man saves on the neck!!! Me and this Squier are going places HOP on THIS BUS LETS RIDE.

GO SQUIER

even right now squier players still have some snobbish attitude towards lower standing squier basses. I for one won't buy standard or affinity series...only VM or CV...I know, I know...but it is what it is. The higher line is the better instrument tho.

Apparently that's what a lot of folks are doing, EC. That's my plan as well, one of the reasons I got both my VM Jazz ad SX P-bass too. I was having too many accidents with my MIA Jazz from leaving it out for easy access when the mood struck me to play. Very minor accidents, with no real damage but still unnerving on a $1200 bass.

yeah i learned a lesson from the first gig i brought my fenders on stage... i would only bring it on paying gigs, but for tributes and local promotion gigs... i only bring out my sx.. although the sx's playability if far or the fender's level... maybe next time i should get myself a CV Squier

I guess I got lucky maybe, the playability on my SX is as good as it was on my '78 Fender P bass. I could tell right out of the box, even with those crappy Chinese strings, and the obvious need for a setup, this bass was gonna be a real player for me. And once I did a quick setup, and put some GHS Precision flats on it, It did indeed become a real player.

Its a shame that equipment that is meant as "entry level" or "lower cost alternatives" get a bad rap. Please no disrespect is intended. These instruments have come into their own. As long as the fit, finish, and overall playability, and sound are what you like, so be it. Remember pre-CBS Fenders, MIA vs. MIM, etc..... Everyone is entitled to their likes and opinions.
