In all the many hundreds of reviews/testimonies I've read on various online stores, websites and forums, I've seen almost universal praise from folks who have owned or at least played a Squier. I myself am a new owner of a Squier VM Jazz, and I find it to be a great instrument, not perfect, but still great. But I still see lots of posts from folks who (I suspect) have either never played one, or have judged them solely on one or two bad experiences saying that Squiers are crap, and they are only worth anything after you mod the hell out of them. I've also read stories from folks who gig with their Squiers being ridiculed by some jerk saying such pithy stuff like "Whyntcha git a real Fender? Squiers are garbage." Why do you suppose that attitude exists even after all this time? It seems to me the abundance of praise for them vastly out weighs the negative, yet the negative rap still persists.

well maybe that's because its a Squier on the headstock...

Squier's to me are pretty decent cheap basses substitutes for fenders, well of course there's a slight difference, in terms of sound, but anyways who cares,
as long as it's comfortable to play...

Mostly bassists would notice if it sounds good or awful, but if you're infront of 500+ people, they would hardly notice how bad or how good the sound of the bass, what's important is it sits in the mix..

The word is "prejudice", an idea of what something is without any substantiated proof. I'm the proud owner of a VM Jazz and love it. At present I'm using it more often than my "real" Fender Precision. I've been playing a lot of different stuff and find the flexibility amazing. I've done nothing but lower the action and put Rotosounds on it.

I have encountered the snide remarks and comments about it being a Squier, I just smile and keep on thumpin".

Of course it's not the same as the Fender American Standard or other Jazz Basses, but I knew that going in. The first time I played one I was amazed, after playing five more and finally getting thoroughly disgusted with a Galien-Kruger Backline 210, I got it.

Would I like to have an American Standard, of course. The fact that I live within my means made the VM a perfect choice, I'll never get rid of it.

There's someone most everybody on the Forums know, BrotherDave. His favorite bass is a Jay Turser that he adores, having heard some tracks he sent, it sounds like a "62 Preecision.

All that being said, most of the people will have opinions all of the time. The majority of opinion is based on heresay or a lack of real knowledge. Most of the time, the people with the real knowledge don't beat on their chests and yell, they already know what they have.

Enjoy your Squiers!

Another attitude I don't get either is from Squier owners themselves. I've read some who've said they wish it didn't say Squier on the headstock, if they could change the decal they would, or they would just plain remove it completely. One guy on TalkBass actually did that, changed it to a Fender decal, not because he was trying to scam anyone on a sale, but just because he was afraid people would judge him as being "unprofessional" because he plays a Squier. He was afraid if any music biz professionals saw him with a Squier it could possibly cost him work. Myself, any so called music pro who would not hire you because of you using a Squier is likely someone I would not want to work for in the first place. "Uh. I really think you're an excellent bassit, and I really dig your sound, but you're playing a Squier. I can't use you unless you get a real Fender." What a load of .... stuff.
People are saying they love their Squier , but they're embarassed by the name. WTF? Are people that insecure? If I get the chance, I WILL use my Squier playing out, and if any idiot makes any snide remarks about it I'll tell them exactly where they can get off.

Bathead:

people are whp they are, let them be who they are, dont try to change them, you wouldnt want people chaning the way you are correct??

and the complaining about this wont help the issue out at all, so just give it up and let those lame (yeah, its dumb how they choose to do this to their squiers) people be who they are, themselves. no one else, good life lesson, not just for music, for EVERYTHING.

love people for who they are, not who you want them to be, and if you dont, them just leave them alone out of your life

Michael,

While I understand your logic, I have to give Bats a +1 for the WTF. I've used my VM in some pretty snobbish situations, I've gotten, "Oh, aren't we worth your good bass?"

After the music started it all quieted down. If it wasn't in this topic it was in another where I said I preferred the VM to my Precision on certain songs. It just fits better. I keep hearing about the "poorer quality" of pups, sorry, my VM blows my Precision away as far as volume and, that soft maple body sounds pretty good. What I really like about it, is, it feels like a '70's Jazz Bass, heavy awkward and unbalanced. Just like the two Jazzes I owned in the '70's. It feels more like a real Jazz than any American I've played.

Sorry to say that there are people so insecure that they feel the need to buy "better" instruments to become accomplished. Of all these kinds of people, I find one thing to be true of all of them. They aren't that good. Maybe there will be those who disagree but, in my experience, that has been the case.

Before you send a nasty reply, go finish scraping the Squier decal off you bass.

im not trying to disagree with bathead, just complaining about what people think about Squiers won't get you anywhere, you just have to not care what they say to you, then when they hear you play it, they shut up and dont say anything because people now a'days are too stubborn to accept that they were wrong.

I understand what your'e saying, Michael, and I agree. I was just expressing my confusion as to where this attitude comes from, on both sides. I feel, though, if you're gonna go to the trouble of coming up to me just to insult me and my equpiment because you have a deep-seeded need to feel superior to someone, then I'm gonna have to say SOMETHING back.

thats the thing though. "say" something back by letting them hear the bass, if they think there equipment is SOO much better, just let them have it through the sound and how good you are at bass. becasue so-so bass players that have say american fenders, or other expensive basses dont get squiers because they think people will talk crap about them, and they wouldnt be able to "fight" back and show them through playing great, so it is probably them who are doing the trash talk on squier, then a good player that has a squier because they like the feel, and sound, and pirce of the guitar or bass, not caring what people think (ex: Bathead) I can tell that you are a good bassist. so back up your bass with the playing, not words.

I think it might even be a bit of jealous snobbery :!:
Someone thinking they paid a huge amount for their real name brand standard, and your cheap squire is sounding really good. That just can't be right so they try to put you down. :)

Same happens to people you bought a mim, they are pushed as why they did not buy American :?

To me it doesn't matter, I'm not from any of the countries fender actually produces equipment in. So I'll buy and play what sounds good, plays well and cost's the least.

Now if one was actually produced in my country I'd be trying to buy that just to support my own people. But that just a personal view.
