I have had the three CV's and liked them all, I traded them out for an Ampeg BA115T amp and a MIA Std Jazz. I enjoyed them all but was never fond of the P-bass, just lacked the tone I wanted, a beautiful bass though, I added a pearl p/g and covers. I have a '57 RI and a MIA Std P's to my collection and love them, the CV just did not compare to either of these.

My everyday, take it with me "beater" is the VMJ, it is super nice, tone is right on too. I did swap out the knobs, pots and cap to those of the '75 Fender. But only because one of the pots self destructed when I went to pull the knob off. The pots are quite cheap as installed. Installed the bridge cover too.

Just depends on what ya want I suppose.....I wouldn't mod my guitar just because someone says " You gotta do this"

The changes in the pots and cap on mine did change the tone, I lost a bit of the "bite" and gained some warmth....it was not planned, but I like the results.

In my collection of bass guitars, I have been trying to achieve different tones for different moods and vibes, not one specific tone. It would be pointless to have more than one if that was the goal.

MIA Jazz - Rosewood F/B and flats for warmth and thump-playin some blues
MIA P- Maple F/B and rounds for metal and hardrock bite
MIA '57 RI P- Maple F/B with flats for vintage rock and surf
VMJ- Roto 66's and the pot mods give a nice versitile in between, perfect for everday playing. I hump this sucker around everywhere with me. No worries about dings or theft.....but quality high enough to enjoy. Does weigh a bit though.

Next and already on order, the VM Shaguar.....yet another different tone in the making ! :D

I have a 2004 Fender Hwy 1 Jazz and a 2004 Squier Affinity Jazz, and it stacks up surprisingly well to the MIA Jazz. I see no need to alter it at this time. I wanted some different tones so I found a beautiful Ibanez SR500 with active electronics in excellent condition at a local pawn shop for $60 with original hardcase!!!! I got a whole instrument for less than the cost of 1 pickup!!! if you want some different sounds, maybe you can find another toy like I did.

Let me just say, I have no problem with modding in and of itself, sometimes it IS necessary, but I have seen a number of people posting on forums stating how thet will change out the pickups/electronics/tuners/bridge BEFORE they actually get the instrument. How can they possibly know it will be necessary to do so UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY PLAY IT? This is what makes me suspect the only reason they want to do that is because it's "the thing to do", not because it's absolutely necessary.

Agree with you. I was going to switch the pickups on my VM, but it sounds so good with the stock Duncan Designs I went against it. I did take off the pickguard tho...not a fan of pickguards in general. If it sounds good to me, it won't be modded as far as sound would go 8)

Ive just bought an Affinity Precision to get me back into playing after many years away from the instrument and ive got to say i love it, it has the larger open back tuners as opposed to the sealed small ones on older Affinitys and it plays great but ive got a thing for all maple necks so thats the only thing i"ll be changing but as it stands it plays great for such a budget instrument.
Beginner instruments were never this good quality years ago.
Once ive got back into playing again i would love one of the cv or vm basses as they look great.

im not trying to be a praty pooper or nothing, but i dont think i can agree with you, Squier makes descent stuff, yes, but their pickups arent to loud or that great sounding, some of the worst pickups ive ever heard actually. the bridge is fine to keep, duh put new strings on after every 2-3 months, and the stock tuning machines are terrible, hold a tune for about 5 hours, you can get some good fender vintage stye tuning machines for $80-$120, and then some great BASSLINES quarter pound pickups for like 65 bucks, so get a $200-$300 bass guitar, and then a total of most likely less than $500 for a lighter bass, great sound, and holds a tune, im not bagging that they arent a good buy, they are for sure, just need an upgrade.

no it wont have the feel of a Fender, ligher weight, and not as good wood, but not a lot different in tone by much, the neck on squiers i feel have better playability than american fenders, so that says something, but electronics and tuning machines need upgrading

SLIGHT disagreement here.

The p'ups on the VM-Jaguar are about the hottest ones I've ever heard on a passive bass!

They are right up there with active sounds with the power they kick out!

Now I don't know why - they must be the same as what's on other VM-series basses, but somehow they just smoke and I have to run that bass through the padded -15dB input all the time to keep my clipping light from twinkling.

They might be picking up stray gamma rays and amplifying the sound - but they are just HUGE in volume and tone.

The only mods ive done to my CV P were mods that i felt had to be done.
It now has a Fender vintage bridge because i find the Squier string spacing a bit too wide. It also has my CV Jazz neck on it because i prefer a slimmer neck.
It has a Wizard Thumper pickup because i wanted a less vintage tone with more punch. This has been done after gigging the stock pup and not just because i can.
All this and it still comes in at under the cost of a stock MIM, and suites me a lot better.
I would say it easily rivals my old Lakland Duck dun as far as tone and playability goes.

Other than that its all stock ;-)

Good to see some thought out opinions here.

I say, if you like it--don't mod it--don't worry what others think.

I have done very little modding--most of it out of necessity.

My Mustang is not modded at all.

I own a CV Jazz bass and I love it. I perfer it over my MIM Jazz. I love the tone, and the neck is fantastic. I love the pickups I will keep those puppies. The only changes I did was a new pick guard, chrome pick up covers, thumb rest, added F neck plate, added 1960's Fender logo on headstock. "The large Jazz bass logo." This thing looks killer. Natural body and Maple neck. Don't look past theses basses. The price, you can't beat. I recommend not modding their great out of the box, just do your set up and your ready.
