I've seen a few user reviews online that claim the black block markers on the VM Jazz are not inlays, but painted on. Quite frankly I'm not sure that's true. The only official descriptions I've seen say they are "inlays", the only place I've seen that they are painted on is in the user reviews. Has anyone seen or read a reliable (and hopefully official) statement that they are indeed painted? I've inspected them very closely myself with a lighted magnifying glass, and as far as I can tell they look to be proper inlays, not painted. Does anyone know positively?

If they have no seam around the block they are painted.

With the lighted magnifying glasses I used, I saw a barely noticeable seam on the edge at least one block where there was what appeared to be a hair thin line of glossy material, possibly glue, a couple of what looked like cut marks on the corners of another. They certainly looked like inlays to me. I had at least one fellow poster on Talkbass who owns one confirmed that they are indeed inlays.
Is it true the Fender Geddy Lee model has painted markers? I'm thinking folks may have the two confused, because, admittedly, it does seem odd that a $1000 Fender has painted markers, yet a $300 Squier has actual inlays. I did notice that the official description of the Geddy Lee bass on the Fender website says it has "rectangular black markers" whilst the offical description of the Squier VM Jazz on their website says "block inlays"
I would think they couldn't use the word "inlays" if they weren't indeed actual inlays. I would think that false advertising if they said they were inlays if they were actually just painted on.

I called fender once to ask them about that. the Geddy Lee no longer has painted inlays, when it first came out it didn't, but at some point they did have painted inlays.

So, we can't even really be sure about the Geddy Lee.
Figures.
I still think if the Geddy Lee had actual inlays, they would specifically use the word "inlays" in the description instead of just the somewhat vague "black rectangular position markers". Then again maybe they just never bothered to change the copy when they went to actual inlays. I suppose a letter to Fender/Squier is in order.

Calling them would be fine. They guy asked if I wanted the exact years and that he could find out, but I didn't care enough. They have stellar customer service.

Just sent Fender consumer relations an e-mail, let's see what kind of response I get. I'll let you know.

Update :
I e-mailed Fender a couple of days ago asking about this. I just got a response from Jeff Krause at Fender and he states that the markers on the Squier VM Jazz Bass neck are indeed actual inlays and not painted on. He says he has no idea how that rumor got started. So, it's official. I realize I may be obsessing a little about this, but you must understand, it was almost a deal breaker for me. I didn't like the idea that at some point the markers were gonna start wearing away and looking like crap. I decided to take the risk. And I'm glad I did.

Yes it is painted. I have a VM squire and it is not real binding or real block inlays. It is painted on. In my opinion I don't really care it sounds great and looks great. I have a American jazz bass with pearl block inlays and you can really tell the difference. Squire VM Jazz bass are painted inlays.

Does not matter to me because I detest inlays anyway. I am of the opinion that the neck has more to do with tone than people realize. Sure inlays look great, but they change the mass and thus the resonance of the neck. Painted markers would impact the tone less and I'd actually prefer the markers be painted on. Celluloid inlays on a rosewood fretboard I'm never having again since I learned from 1971 on that on a Jazz a pretty inlaid and bound neck is actually more prone to being a lifeless but pretty thing.

Now that is just my OPINION. It is my FEELING. I have very sensitive feelings. Don't hurt them by saying I'm crazy. I'm not crazy! The county had me tested!
