well, here are the main differences, from what i know.

1. fender guitars are usually built with high quality - strings, body, pickups, bridge, etc than squier guitars

2. squier guitars are thus cheaper in pricing.

3. there might be difference in clarity of tone, feel of the bass, etc

well, those are the main differences from what i remember.

obviously you would conclude that a fender is "better", but "better" is a really subjective word. you should buy a bass guitar that you've tried out, like very much, and can afford. i have heard that certain models of squier bass guitars, such as the vintage modified series, give standard fenders a run for their money as the quality of the guitar was not far from a standard fender. in the end, its your choice.

cheers.

C'mon, really? The Vintage Modified Series are top notch quality guitars. I would say my VM is better than some of the MIM Fender. I got mine brand new in a box, got it tuned, it was good sounding already. I just decided this will be my little project bass, it's cheap, good quality, I can change thing on it and make it my "own" bass.

I play primarily guitar, so maybe my feedback is not as helpful, but i have just recently picked up the bass and went with a standard squier jazz bass and so far I have been impressed.

Squire basses are fantastic instruments, and in terms of "value for money" they're simply unbeatable.

Squier's are not bad. for a few bucks you can make a couple upgrades to it and still pay far less than for it's Fender counterpart. :)

I almost bought a Squire P-bass but I ended up with a Fender Amer. Deluxe J-bass. It ultimately depends on how much $$$ you're willing to spend. Try before you buy.

Agreed, to a point. You can't make the bottom of the line Squiers to be as good as the bottom of the line Fenders without putting way more $$ into it tho. You gotta pay to play right  That's why I got the Squier, so I can mod it a little.

I have a Squier Black/Chrome P-Bass Special that I absolutely LOVE. I went through quite a few to find a good one, but when I did, I brought it home the same day. I put a set of DiMarzio P-J Stacks in it for 70 bucks, and the bass is a dream. 8)
