So a month or so ago, I got the bright idea that I would learn bass. This was the result of my husband wanting to learn guitar. I picked bass just to be different. 8)

Anyway, I have my Squire 5-string now and know next to nothing about her or even playing. The playing part I can manage (learning on my own same way I learned web development on my own). All I can find out about her is that she was crafted in Indonesia (says so on the back of the headstock) and from the serial number (and what Wikipedia states) she's an '06 model. Other than that, I have no clue. I don't know the difference between the different models (Precision, Jazz, etc.).

This is the pic of my bass' headstock.

And this is her body (sounds vaguely improper)

Help for the clueless?

Ok, so in reading some of the older posts in this forum, it appears I have a jazz base.

I guess I'm just kind of thrown by the lack of any "designation" of just 'what' it is (other than, of course, a Squier).

Honestly, I was just trying to figure out what I had, other than a "generic" Squier bass.

I read of the P-bass (Precision Bass), the J-bass (Jazz Bass) and various others and in looking at the pix of them generated confusion for me about mine.

Clear as mud, eh? :?

Nah, its cool. Just don't obsess over the little things, especially brand names. I've witnessed more pointless debates that consumed way too much of my time, when I could have been practicing instead. In truth, I am more interested in why you chose a 5 string bass?

*laughs at myself* Um, because it was the prettiest one there.

LOL, my degree is in Fine Arts, so I tend to be rather visually oriented. I loved the color combination (black cherry sunburst? I think). It just happened to be a 5-string. At this point, I'm kind of ignoring the B-string and learning the basics.

So far, I'm enjoying the process... plus it keeps me young.

I think that is refreshingly honest and admirable. I'm certain you are aware that we menfolk like our toys to be of a certain fit and finish, which we cleverly diguise behind a cloak of masculinity. So, no it is not silly to have picked a bass because of its aesthetic. As far as picking the 5 string, I think you stumbled into a blessing. I have found that practicing on a 5 string has improved my 4 string technique. When I started, I had problems getting a nice plucking motion on the E-string because of a lack of a good anchor point. I discovered that the B-String is a perfect anchor point! Since then, I now get the consistent sound on the e-string without an anchor, but using a 5 string certainly helped. Just make sure that you don't skipp learning scale shapes for 5 string basses, because you will appreciate the extended scales when you start learning 2 octave scales and arpeggios (that either gave you something to look forward to or forever shut the door on using the B-string for anything other than a great thumbrest).

Thanks for listening!
