Hello, really interested in taking up the bass guitar and would like some advice on a new bass.
I am pretty set on something from Squier. I am torn between the P and J bass. I like the simplicity of the Precision and I lean towards punk rock and it seems to be one of the iconic punk basses. However, I do like the the Jazz bass tone and am a big fan of Geddy Lee. Also I have smaller hands so the J bass neck might be better for me.
I do plan on trying both out at the store before making a final decision but would love to hear your thoughts.

I also see the P bass special online with the P bass neck pickup and J bass bridge pickup with the J bass neck on a P bass body.
Is the best of both worlds bass that could be perfect for me? How are the tones from the mixed pickups? Can you get P bass and J bass tones or do you just end up wth something in between? Thanks.

Welcome.

You've answered a lot of your own questions with the P Bass Special. It indeed appears that it would perfectly suit your requirements and the tones you can get from it are outstanding. I doubt very strongly that you'll be disappointed. Again, and as you've stated, your best bet is to try them all out first. Good luck!

Try them out first. The p bass special is probably what's going to suite your needs best. I am an owner and player of multiple p basses jazz basses and even a musicman stingray. They all have thier own purpose, and I'd say you need all of them. The P bass however is a great start, and although you can get jazz bass-ish tones from the p bass special nothing will sound like a jazz nor will anything sound like a p bass.

Ultimately if your going to take advantage of the bridge pickup go with the p bass special, otherwise go with a classic vibe bass. 8)

That's why I bought one of each. Now I don't have to say "It sounds just like a..." and hope nobody calls me on it.

Howdy! I have a Fender/Squier "mutt"...a Squier P bass body with a Fender fretless Jazz neck, and it has a DiMarzio P pickup. It was put together by a friend...and it sounds good enough for me!

The Squire p-bass special is what I original went in looking for, when I spotted a Fender p-bass standard (MiM) hanging on the rack for 1/2 price.

But when I asked about it the store salesperson insisted I try out a Squire Classic Vibe 60's P-bass as well and that is the one I ended up taking home. The Classic Vibes seem to be really well made, and at a fairly low cost to boot.

Check them out before you decide on anything in particular.
