they are, if you cant afford a mexican fender. A lot of people seem to go with the trend of buying a squire, then mexican fender whihc is fine, but there are cheaper begginer basses out there that wont set you back as much for when you move on up to the Fender :D

Actually, any bass for a beginner would be good to learn on. Squiers top of the line has become quiet a piece of instrument to spend money on. I've had a Fender for 20 years now, with other brands in between those years. Last year I got the Vintage Modified, I couldn't believe how good it was when I played with it @ the music store. I think quality control is not the best cuz you get different variations of bad things on the Squier, as opposed to MIA Fender you see the bad QC but it's more the exception. Pretty soon Fender is going to have to have a low line under Squier, cuz if the trend of getting better instrument for less, these Squiers are going to go up in price. My suggestion is this, get what you can afford, be it Fender or Squier or Ibanez or Peavey or Jay Turser or whatever, but remember you might not be "into it" with in the year, so don't spend too much. You can always upgrade when you feel the bass guitar is your choice for an instrument. Good luck :)
