Any opinions on the 75 Jazz bass VM , (with the natural finish and maple fretboard)? I was thinking this might make a good backup instrument for my Fender AmStad Jazz, something I can modify (pickups, bridge whatever) without worrying about ruining a $1200 instrument. What components on this bass are likley to need replaced, and can I just use parts made for Fender basses as direct replacements? Will they fit a Squier?

It's actually '70s vintage modified. I like mine, it's a back up, albeit 2nd back up to my '87. It sounds really good, I got it when the price was still $279. For the money, the craftsmanship is excellent.

I took off the pg, big hole for the front pup, but I don't care too much for pick guards, so it'll stay that way. I also replaced the bridge, BadAss II. I like how it looks. As for replacing parts w/Fender parts, I know the tuning keys are not compatible with MIA(some drilling requiered), maybe the MIM will tho.

I really like my VM Jazz. I too added a Badass bridge, changed the strings to Rotosound Swing's & up-graded the tuners wilh Wilkenson's. The only cosmetic change I made was to add a Tort pickguard. Compared to my MIM Precision, the quality is right up there. The Duncan Designed p'ups are real nice. I did have to add some shielding to the control cavity to prevent a slight humming when one or the other vol knob was rolled off at all. A great bass for the price that only needs a few mods.

Just an update....
I took the plunge and ordered the VM Jazz from Sweetwater.com this morning, I will be getting it tomorrow.
I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I'm getting it as a backup to my '08 Fender MIA Jazz, I wanted a cheap but decent bass to knock around with, possibly do some mods without worrying about screwing up an expensive bass, and with all the positive user reviews as well as the vintage vibe color scheme I've been dying to get on a bass, this seemed like a no-brainer. Let's hope it lives up to the hype.
