I got into playing hardrock/metal in the late 80's but thanks to my drummer brother I got exposed to other styles as well. He pushed me to try and incorporate other styles into my playing. I never got into the funk thing which seemed to be the mainstay of bass playing during that time period but thats how I learned about Steely Dan as well as Delta Blues and even a little Disco (yes I dare say Disco) I would be playing a Black Sabbath riff and my brother would be playing some weird disco beat and then I would try and make it work. Sometimes it did other times it didn't but it really forced me to step out of my comfort zone and for that I am thankful because in the long run it made me a better bassist.

yea disco can be a bit annoying at times but the bass lines very funky and it caught my attention and forced me to do better.. as well as reggae stuff.. I didnt like heavy rock stuff cause I get lost in the mix at times even when I push in mids... and I dont like rythm players playing same lines as me.. or well its just me... but before I can hide my mistakes when playing along heavy punk lines.. :D

I kinda know what you mean about blues. My first love is 1970's rock, but I love playing blues gigs too because they're more supportive and not very demanding, and I've got the best seat in the house to what is usually some great music! Unless I've been playing with other rockers for a long time, i think rock demands more of my attention than blues. At a blues gig I have more mental space to take it all in and enjoy the show.

I feel so wrong for saying that, but it's true!

I'm really into listening and playing stoner rock its very bluesy 70's sounding and just a lot of fun to play. Kinda chillin and being loud and aggressive at the same time.
