well wood quality and finishes differ to high priced and budgeted basses anyways pickups winded for VM's give them a great tone otherwise changing them sometimes could give bad reaction.. also the pots for most Squier's are errr 500k..

I got a CV 50's SCPB a couple months ago from MF and couldn't be happier with it. I had some reservations about buying a Squier, but this time I thought I'd give one a try, mainly because It looked so good in Lake Placid Blue (my favorite Fender color!) with that big ol' pickguard. I know a well built guitar when I have one in my hands, and this Squier is definitely a great bargain for the money. Sure, the electronics are somewhat subpar by my standards, but they're easily replaceable. IMHO the fit and finish of this "cheap" bass is up there with more expensive models.
I decided to keep it, and proceeded to upgrade the pickup and controls, copper shielding and a new pickguard and knobs. I topped it off with a set of flatwounds. The pots are 250k, same as the stock ones.
It looks and sounds 100 percent better with around $130 in upgrades. A+++ Would buy a Squier again. :)

I think I've seen you on TB. Those are very cool but the single coil just isn't for me.

Looks really cool tho!

I have to wade in on this one. I just bought an affinity J bass 5 string, and I love it! Here's how I see it:

The made-in-China J bass 5 has all of the important features you look for in a Fender J; an ALDER body and a maple neck. :D Most budget basses have bodies made from nato, basswood, agathis or some other more economical wood. Alder is what gives a bass that low-mid growl that us old rockers love so much! The necks are very good, and having played a good number of these paricular basses, I can say with some authority that they are EXACTLY the same. Every one plays and feels the same. And what's even better is that they play and feel exactly like the US made basses.

That being said, the setup out of the box is terrible on every one as well! :? This is not a big thing, as I have always had to set up every bass I've brought home from the cheapest to the most expensive ( I have a few Spector bass as well). The pickups and electronics are OK, but will be upgraded soon.

Oh yeah, one last very important thing - When you take off the pickguard, you will not find a big, sloppy, gaping hole around the neck pickup like you will find on the MIM Fenders! A true sign of quality!

I will say that the finish on the J bass 5 is quite brittle and chips easily. I don't mind the character marks though!

I've been wondering about the woods used in the bodies. Alder = good, ok, but how do you know what you're getting when the sales guys tell you it's plywood crap in an effort to sell you something more expensive?

Is there somewhere that lists the makes & models & the countries of origin and actually says what they're made of? I HATE guitar salespeople because they're so often uninformed and want you to buy what they want.

Mostly I'm afraid of getting a plywood body. I know they did that for a while...
