In my modest "collection", I have:
1. Highway One P, with "Original 62 Precision Bass Pickups", Vintage reissue reverse tuners and strung with Rotosound Jazz flats.
2. Fender 51 Precision Reissue, stock with TI Jazz Flats, Hipshot Tuners and a Gotoh bridge.
3. Squier 50's Vibe SCPB, strung with 9050S Medium light flats, the only mod to this bass was replacing the saddle height screws with 6-32's (better fit after rethreading)
4. Squier (Indonesia) Affinity P bass, the only mods are a bridge cover and a set of Highway One pickups, with D'Addario flats.

Build wise I can say that the '50's Vibe is built as well as USA Highway One and the MIJ 51 Reissue. The Affinity P comes in a close second with the only major differences being the routs are a bit deeper than the others and the finish on the neck was almost non-existent. (Made re-shooting it in nitrocellulose lacquer very easy) Other than that it had tuners of the MIM and Highway One style, work very well.
The difference in electronics is where the greatest variations came. ( I can see replacing them in all the bases.)

Regards,
Kevin

It's been better for a better part of at least 3 yrs. My VM has better build quality than my MIM.

I wouldn't ever trade my 2 Squier VM for a MIM. I honestly think the Standard series basses are inferior to both the Classic Vibe and VM series. People are stupid to buy the standards I reckon. They're just after the Fender logo not a superior instrument.

Actually it's stupid to generalize. Check out the new Standards, they're really good. Like it or not, the Squier name will not have the Fender cache, but, like every man made thing, some are better than others. I played a bad VM P Bass last week. Not really surprised since I've played a bad MIA Deluxe J Bass too. You'll probably won't find too many bad MIM anymore, Fender has supposedly tighten up the QC on the MIA/MIM/CIJ/CIK...so has Squier. That just means better bang for your buck - the consumers. And that can't be bad for anyone.

A classic try before you buy. Of course thats the case with any big purchase I make. Fender MIA basses that are bad are less frequent then Squires and MIM. With Fender basses and guitars you get what you pay for. Thats not to say your getting a bad product if you buy other then MIA but the QC that I have found on the MIA is a lot more consistent and the materials a lot better.

The quality of Squiers has really jumped up in the last 2 or three years, especially with the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series. I am happily and proudly playing a Squier professionally.

Agreed...you can find post that I've said the same, and you'll find MIM that you thought you just got a MIA, with it being so 'perfect'...

Yep, I've gotten both, MIJ is my main bass...I've sold MIA & MIM Fenders. I don't get the attachement thing with 'em. I'm only attached to the MIJ for sentimental value. The closest to regret I have is selling my Stu Hamm I sig model, but easily forgotten ;)

I have a squire fretless jazz bass and it plays and sounds awesome. I also have an American Standard P-Bass, It's my #1 Bass my #2 Bass is my Gibson Grabber. But to answere your question yes the quality it there. Squire is the real deal.

I personally think that some of squier's stuff far exceeds the fender counter parts. The top of my list is the Mike dirnt pbass, the CV 60's pbass and the VM tele bass.

1) The dirnt the same except it has the squier logo, no BA2, and a star. I doubt sand paper, a fender logo, some electrical tape (or black paint) and a BA2 together would cost $700. It is very high quality and I'm a bit of a snob. I wouldn't pay a lot for it because it says squier on it, but for the price I got it for I scream "I'm a huge squier fan!!!!"

2) The CV 60's rivals the '59 CS pbass in every way except the logo (sorry) and the sound (of course CS pups are going to sound better than squier). I love the high gloss neck and the color is sweet. It is almost flawless. If I had one of those with the 59 pups I'd take it any day over the CS (and thats saying sumthin... I'm a huge fan of bursts and man is the 59's burst yummy)

3) Listen to the VM tele. Listen to it's vintage counterpart. Compare the prices. Do I have to say anything else?

Tommy Gunn, you can you tube it, look for Squier/Fender bass comparison by Bass Player mag IIRC, they compared the Squier v. the Fender basses, pretty good vid.
