Greetings All,

I'm just starting out with the bass (I bought the Squier fretless vintage modified jazz bass). I've been seeing a lot of websites that offer online lessons and even offering to make you a bass "god" in 3 months. Are all of them frauds? Do any of you know about a reliable site?

I'd settle for being bass "proficient" in 6 months! :D Please help!

Welcome to the world of the lows and to the forum as well! :D

First of all, congrats on your purchase, you got yourself a really nice bass there, I wonder if it's too special for a beginner - because it's fretless but if it has markers, I guess it's okay.

Website, well, I haven't visited any of those, I have a book called THE BASS HANDBOOK. It was written by Adrian Ashton, a great bassman (just to stay on Fender field :P ) who really knows his thing.

The book gives a great insight to both the history and playing techniques of basses and has chapters dealing with the strings and different amp and effect setups as well.

I'm too self-taught to be learning from it regularly, but it gives a really nice reading from time to time. :)
All in all, it has everything to be a good teacher, I highly recommend it.

p.s.: Don't forget to post pics of the bass in the corresponding topic if you can. :)

Thanks rkithun! I thought about the fretless being a little advanced; but it was love at first sight. I did play a little as a kid (I'm 45 now), but for all intents and purposes I'm a beginner again.

I'll checkout the book you recommended. I'm currently using
Bass Method I from the Hal Leonard series; the video really helps.

If you can tell me how to post a pic, I would love to!

I frequently use www.basscamera.com for tabs. I paid for 2 months ($4.95) and it was worth it, due to the fact that it helped me learn some technique. I now use MarloweDK's bass site, which does the same thing, except its free.
