I'm sure this will be like opening a can of worms....

I'm still using the strings that came stock on my P-Bass Special.
I want to change them out here pretty soon and not sure of what to change them out for...so many choices....
I'm looking for that real ground movin sound...but smooth....and clean..NOT MUD....

Whats your preferences and why?

On a note I play with the P's turned up and the J turned Down/off...
I think the P gives a warmer deeper sound for the music type I play.

Flat wounds will give you a smooth and very vintage like tone. A lot of soul, RnB and motown records were recorded with bassists using a P Bass with flats.

Roundwound will give you a much punchier modern tone but you can get lovely smooth tones from them too. Most people nowadays use Rounds.

All I can really say is just buy a couple of differing sets (play with different string gauges too) and find what suits you best. :)

Hmn. I use Zachary Optimum Gauge strings but they only come as Round wounds afaik.

The guy's sales pitch on his site is a little...erm...well...intensive but they're my preferred strings because they feel balanced and are nice to play. I might start experimenting more, but will try to stick close to the gauges the ZOGs come in :)

http://www.zacharyguitars.com/Strings.htm

To order you just email him and pay via paypal - they're very reasonable prices.

Otherwise I guess Rotosound are an old favourite, as are LaBella's.

On most of my basses I prefer roundwounds because I like the crisp piano string sound. On my fretless I'm using nylon tapewounds because I'm looking for that upright sound. Those nylons are really fun to play.

I think I've found the strings I've always wanted. I'm now using DR Black Beauties on my 70's Jazz Classic. It's the best and cleanest sound I've ever had.

I use DAddario XL 170 . They give me a combination of warmth and brightness for a vast majority of situations . But Im thinking on trying the Elixir brand strings .

I love this string, I just don't like how the coating comes off. The sound tho, still awesome after 1 yr this month on my '87.

I bought the Elixir strings ! $66 dollars ,ouch ! Great tone and tight sounding ! let's see how long they last , according to Elixir should last three times more than regular strings ! gauges are 45-65-85-105-125

Geez dude, and I complained to have spent $35 on the DR Black Beauties...phew, I'm on the Fender 7350 SS right now. I'm thinking of putting those on the VM. If they have the 5 string, those will be the ones I'll put on the 5. I love stainless sound. The Fender are just $20 a set, I got the Medium - .45 .65 .85 .105 for the gauge.

I've used Fender strings before but they dont last like the DAddarios ! That's why I use DAddario and Im trying the Elixirs now . I prefer the nickle strings , they have a warmer sound ! Before DAddario I used GHS boomers and on occasions Ken Smith strings .

D'addarios and GHS I've never had luck with them. DR and Fender I've had great luck with. DR usually last a long time too. The coated strings last a long time, just not the finish.

I was going to post this last night.... but the place was closed? What is this Boston? We have a closing time? No last call.

Anyhoo.... I have great luck with the Fender strings. I do notice it takes a day or so to warm them up however... so I plan ahead of time.

Maybe I am doing something wrong? I stretch the hell out of them. But for me they last longer than the other brands (haven't tried Ernie Ball) but their is that warm-up period.

The Squier strings (1/2 the cost) worked decent for me as well... not sure if they lasted longer or not... did require the warm-up time.
