I use medium flat wounds. They get the sound I'm looking for.

The Fender 7250 NPS strings are so mongrel-ized that you never know what they are going to sound like, but for some arcane reason they sound really good on my VM-Jaguar.

I bought three new basses this past year and the others that had the 'purported' Fender 7250 NPS strings obviously didn't have any such thing on them.

Sadly, Fender has prostituted their strings out to whomever appears to offer the lowest price I'm afraid.

Rumor has it that SOME D'As are in use - but I find that hard to believe. Another rumor was that Martin was winding strings for them - maybe!

What I find on the VM-Jaguar is that those RED silked strings are in all probability either from the Fender/Mexico string machines or they accidentally found a good set and accidentally put them on my Jaguar someplace in Indonesia, wherever that is.

RED silks - BLACK silks - NO silks - they are all over the board for quality, but I know when these on the Jag go south, then I'm switching to ROTO 45s.

The other basses all have Elixir Nanos on them and they are really great - OH, except for my Squier Precision which has ROTO 77s on it.

C'mon Fender - who or whom do you think you're fooling? I'm sure you could cut a very financially-nice deal with ROTOSOUND for their RS45 strings - just don't let your bean-counters tell ROTO how to make them and you'll all do good-er.

Ya hear me?

Fender NPS does sound warm and good but they tend to go "dead" fast...

I used stainless steel for all my basses. I used to use the Fender 7350, but man they must use a dif't supplier now, cuz some sound good, some sound ok, some I replace after a week being on my bass cuz it's dead already. When I'm out of these strings, I'm going to go back to DR Hi Beams. The gauge I use is .45 - .105.

A few weeks ago I started getting scared that my Rotosound Flats were going to bow thw neck on my Precision. I happened to have a spare set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky's on the shelf for a couple years.

Surprisingly, they sounded pretty good. I used a mute and had the bass on full on my bass and amp. They've held up well and still sound o.k.

The subject of quality keeps coming up. I've worked is Quality Assurance for a long, long time. The way of companies today is, buy the cheapest raw materials you can find. Translating this to strings, for such a difference in them it has to in material, it's always material. A wise old inspector once told me, "You can't make chicken soup out of chicken crap". Words to live by.

For those of us that follow the Fender Forums, it would seem that the two best strings out there are , GHS and Thomastik.

I'm not trying to start a huge war, it just seems that those are the most recommended. I tried to order some GHS flats from MF yesterday, they have free shipping for a while, they were all on backorder.

I got my GHS Precision flats (.45-.105) from Amazon.com, and because I have a Prime membership, I got free two day shipping on them, and they only cost $21.99.

I'm beginning to think the only string manufacturer with a conscience any more is Rotosound. I've switched to the RS45s and they sound like a set of Fender 7250s should.

As for the EB strings - they are hermetically packed for a good reason: they go sour like milk outside the refrigerator as soon as you open the packs.

I think all the sound bugs escape when they get opened. All I know is that by noon the next day after I put some EBs on, they were dead and my dead G-string notes were gone - worse than I've ever heard (or not heard) them.

Purified chicken feces I feel.
