Relicing pictures of my bass :D

Check out how this bass sounds in this video:

this 60's pickups is amazing! To me it sounds just like Pastorius, Jaco's bass! or similar.... just like cars, these pickups are like muscle under the hood

I wanted it to look like as natural as possible and that it's been around for years

Shine- shine go away- come again another day

MIM Standard J-Bass Top, Squier Relic project below
the back of the neck is shiny compared to the headstock, making it look like that the palm buffed and shined the neck after years of playing...
Image
check out the yellowish/tan tinting I did compared to the almost white MIM neck. You'd be surprised how easy it was to tint the neck just by using regular household stuff.

MIM left, Squier Relic project right ( it looks like the headstock yellowed after several years )

my favorite! Shaved screw!

Thanks for checking out my Squier Relic Project Bass!
I'd be glad to help and would appreciate to see the pics and hear some of your relicing tips & techniques guys! :o

Hey Mark, and thanks for your e-mail. Your relicing-job on this bass look totally awesome. One of the best I've seen. How did you do the tinting of the neck?

I have an ongoing relicing-project with my Squier Affinity Precision Bass. At this stage I have dissembled the bass and is working on the body. This is how it looks so far (sorry for the big pictures):

Thanks Indigo. Cool pics man you did a very natural look...Nice! I used "brown Kiwi shoe polish" to tint the neck! I was amazed that it worked! And its permanent! ...I did like 3 coats of it!

Ahh, finally something we have here in Sweden also =) So you just rubbed it in and let it dry, or did you wipe it off at any stage?

Yep, I coated it then I let it dry before wiping off the wax ... :) I wiped it off on every coat

I used the wax polish not the liquid polish

A little "how to" would be nice, esp. when it comes to tinting. ;)

Talking about tinting: how can I tint the bright white lines of the Squier VM fretless J's Ebonol fingerboard to make them appear maybe more yellowish or brownish? That white is just too stark of a contrast.

You can try brown shoe polish or a paste made from instant coffee to stain the lines on the finger board.

Whe you all relic bodies. You should keep some kind of pickguard on the bass so that it stays new looking under the pickguard.-
Only if you want an accurate relic, That is.

I have a problem with all of the rust repesented on relics these days.

Aside from the fact that reletively few players ever beat the crap out of their guitars or basses like SRV, the rust was not something that happened to most guitars, or if it did, players usually took care of it with steel wool.

I just looked at a Geniuine '66 Strat and a '56 strat at GC. The guitars had plenty of playing wear on the fingerboards but no light brown rust anywhere and also the chrome was still shiny on places that had no hand contact, like jack plates, bridge plates, and neck plates, etc.

A lot of what is being represented as an accurate job of relicing is pure myth. IMHO

I have a very old acoustic guitar and since I switched and play the bass now, the acoustic was kept and have not been used for a long time and the tuner mounting screws where rusted. but I agree with you! all of the rust repesented on relics these days is kinda exaggerated.
That's good information BCbassman, thanks! yeah I remember my very first bass about 15 years ago.. I did that! every time I had a scratch or something on the metal hardware I took care of it with either steel wool or rubbing compound..
that freshened up my memory... It's hard to really make an accurate relic but It sure feels good to play an instrument that have been around and has high millage :D

check out this cool bass slap that I found at youtube 8)
