Hello fellow Jazzers,

I am going to hot mod my VM Fretless with a couple of cool items. The 1st is the good ole standby: BadAss II.
The other is replacing the electronics with an Audere JZ3 Preamp. It's a complete pre-wired unit with cover plate, knobs, switch, battery, and indicator LED. The circuit boards and solder-less harness is a nice touch.Has anyone installed this mod and what do ya think? It looks the biz and appears to be an easy and inexpensive mod.

The procedure took about 20 mins to complete. It went fairly well and without incident. I would like to note that install on a Squire Vin Jazz Bass Mod Fretless (at least on mine) required that I drill two new holes in my bass as the plate did not line up exactly with the old mounting holes. No biggie as the plate covers the old ones anyway.

I ran through the Z-Mode switch positions. There are 3,Hi,Mid,and Lo.Each position offers a different set of tonal coloration.

All the following test runs were done with the eq flat.

Mode 1 gave a deep and throaty voice which was very old school. To my ears,it almost introduced a tube-like tonality.

Mode 2 gives the bass a nice growl in the mid-range with just enough highs to add a real sweetness to the upper registers.Harmonics respond well and the lows really cut without sacrificing the bottom. This is my favorite setting.

Mode 3 is a really new tone when it comes to the Jazz bass. Most often I think of a Jazz as having that real throaty and cutting mid range tone. With the Z-Mode switch in the # 3 position I am hearing razor sharp highs with enough mids to keep it from getting a bit too harsh. Not really a tone I always go for,but then again if I had installed this unit on a fretted Jazz I may reach for that Alenbic Ox tone!

Keep in mind that all of these test runs were done without use of any of the on-board eq of the Audere (which by the way are super quiet and sensitive). The blue LED battery life indicator gets points for functionality and coolness and the pots are smooth and tight.
I will continue to post as I get even more familiarized with this unit.So far, I am impressed!

Agreed my friend! This lil preamp will make it's way into my next Jazzer as well. Love Z-mode 2 on a fretless, really gets that growlin' muah goin'!
Did ya run into any snags with fitment or anything when you installed?

Installed the JZ-3 in my Affinity V last night...the good folks at Audere Audio even substituted black knobs for me.They look pretty slick!

first, hello and ur bass look awesome markbass4444. i am new to bass and have what might be a silly question. the jz3 mod give u 1vol and the a 3b eq. how do you control the vol for the pups wiith this mod. again i am new to bass, so please be nice.

i think the mod is great, but just a liilte lost on the controls. the websites does not do a good job of explaining how one would control vol on both pups. :!:

Hey Crimer!
Hey..no shame in asking!

Looking at the pic,all the way to the right is the volume knob which controls both pickups simultaneously.Right next to that is the 3 position Z Mode switch.Next is a stacked knob which controls the balance (bottom part of the knob) and the mids (top part of knob). The next stack controls bass (bottom knob) and highs (top knob). Using the balance portion of the 1st stacked knobs will blend between the bridge pickup and the neck pickup much like the balance knob does on a stereo between the left and right channels. On this model of the JZ3 there is no dedicated volume for each pickup..you just "blend" them with the balance control.
Does that clear it up for you?
Juan :D

i decided to get some mods done and have ordered the audere preamp along with the babicz bridge. the bridge came yesterday and it is really nice. you can really feel the resonance thru the wood in the body and neck. the sustain has improved dramatically. once i get the preamp i will post pics. of course i am looking for a tusq nut to finish of the mods. 8)

i wiil look to do tuning keys at a later date!
