Hi everyone, I'm mostly in the Strat and Tele forums but today I am seeking advice for a friend who's been playing guitar for about a year now. So yesterday I learned from him that he was interested in giving a shot at playing bass. He's exclusively playing Metal and he's on a budget of around a grand for the bass, gig bag and amp. I know nothing about basses but wanted to help him to choose a decent gear anyway. I talked to him about the Fender Forums but beeing in a serious GAS mode I'm concerned that he could buy in a hurry, something not really suited for his needs. Anyway, to make a long story short, any infos will be appreciated and passed along to the concerned fellow. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

Claude.

My suggestion is that your friend goes down to the local music stores and tries out as many basses as he can get his hands on. What feels good and works for me may/will not work for someone else. He needs to find "his" bass. Have him bring his strap or borrow/use one from the store, so that he can try out basses in a comfortably primary playing position and not the "sitting down on a stool trying out a new bass" position. Don't let him rush into getting something just to get it. He needs to take his time.
But since you said that he plays metal, he could get precision bass. It worked for Geezer Butler and Steve Harris, among others. Ibanez basses are also associated with metal music.
Amp wise, definately look used. More for your money, and since he is working with a budget, an amp/cab to play metal loud enough to compete with a drummer. 300-500 watts, those 100 watt combo amps are great for practice or playing with just a guitarist or two, but get drowned out by a drummer.
