I'm on my second Squier, which I just picked up for a song and dance last weekend. This one is a 2001 Precision Bass Special, with the p/j pickup combo. Sage Green Metallic, and she's a beaut. Only issue with it, the previous owner replaced the stock pickguard with a piece of formica (ugh), and while it matches up and looks pretty good, IT'S A FRIGGIN PIECE OF FORMICA. I ordered a replacement from Guitar Fetish, and it just doesn't match up..looks like I'll be paying up for an official Fender part afterall. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket pickguard that squares up with the cavity, screw holes, etc?

Formica? That's a strange one there. How about one made from a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer box? :P

I'm telling you, CPL, it really looks GREAT from a distance. But, once you see the cut, it's just no damn good. The color match was right on target, and if the shop guy hadn't told me, I'd have thought it was stock. I'll get a pic up as soon as I figure out how to get the URL....

Actually, it does, but now I'm trying to imagine a counter top that looks like that and it makes more sense on the the bass. Go figure. My girlfriend's grandmother has this orange counter top from the 70's (just like the "Brady Bunch") in her basement apartment kitchen. If they ever remodel it down there and take it out, hmm... :P Could this be a new trend in instrument customization? It would be recycling, I suppose.

Make it TWO! My long-awaited Squier Bass VI arrived moments ago.

RAT ROD FENDER BASS (SQUIER and USA PARTS) ----I have a 2005 (?) Squier Affinity flamed neck with rosewood board and a Squire Alder body that some guy stripped and put blue stain on and poured some kind of terrible Military smelling clear on. I started with that. I sanded off the clear and some of the stain came off but it looks really cool. I also sanded off the logo along with sanding the front of the headstock. I put amber oil stain on it. I worked the nut a bit too. Also filed the fret ends and polished them and oiled the rosewood. I went to the parts box and put all Fender parts on it except for a Dimarzio model P pickup. Oh - I made a flame maple pickguard and put that on it along with a thumbrest in the 74 position. It's a light bass. I strung it up with Rotosound round wounds. I plugged it in my 8-10 stack with an SVT 350. Of course like everyone else does- I'll say it sounds killer but I'm not fakin'- there's a whole lot of shakin' going on in my man cave. The Rat Rod is like a signature model now or something like that. :D

When I started playing all the Japanese and Chinese etc copy guitars were usually pretty junky. I copped an attitude toward "lesser" bass models from the Orient and other places. That stuck with me for a long time and I always played a USA bass. Over the years some of those companies started to make their guitars better . Now some of those guitars are really pretty good. All I can say now is - if it sounds good to you and you like it - go for it. I love my MIM Roadworn and the Rat Rod is good too. I may just get another Squier and do it up too. You never know. They go for about 100 bucks around here and new ones are about 250. But I haven't been checking around. I didn't spend much on the Rat Rod. I had all the parts already to complete the build.

I guess when you are dealing with a certain price point, it can be a crap shoot. I've found that out the hard way. But if you can get a good deal, then that's good, too. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll buy another Squier after what happened with me and that Bass VI I ordered and had to wait a few months for, only to have to return it because the neck was screwed up on it. It also didn't help matters on how Fender customer service dealt with the situation, which is why I'm still a little miffed. This happened before several years ago with an issue I had with a MIM Standard P-Bass and I had nothing to do with them until I decided to give them a second chance when I got the Rumble 350 combo (which I love) and a Squier Vintage Modern Custom Telecaster (which is really nice and what made me try the Squier brand to begin with.) I'm not so sure about a third chance because I'd feel kind of like a jackass giving money to a company that has dicked me around with excuses and trying to pass the buck on to a company that actually did good with their customer service (and why I'm a loyal customer to them.) I know Squier is a budget brand, but it's the principle of the matter. They are still putting their name on something that you expect to be a certain level of quality for what they charge and who they are, not broken and unplayable. I don't expect it to be an American-made custom shop instrument, but come on.

I understand where you are coming from. The thing that got me going about my ONE Squier (that is now a Project bass) is that the neck is really tiger stripe flamed. What's up on that? I wonder if that's common?........NO !!!! So I jumped on it. The fret ends were like razor blades. That takes careful filing so I spent a long time doing it. The price was good and that's a good thing over all or I wouldn't have gone thru with paying more than I did. AND the bass is really not a Squier bass anymore. Just the body and neck are.

side note-- you have to like Fender for a lot of reasons--- one being that you can write on here how bad they suck or whatever ( with limitations) and the mods and rockers don't cut you off. Try doing that on Sterling Balls site. He'll send a hit squad to your house!!! HA!!! :D

I don't actually think Fender sucks, other than their customer service and some of their quality control. But it really is a crap shoot on the Squier and MIM series. My Squier Tele was a mice guitar, the Jazz is OK, but I think I'm not too keen on the neck feel. It sounds good, though. That Bass VI's neck feel was actually really nice, but it was totally screwed up. If it wasn't, that would have been a nice instrument, feel wise. I couldn't tell you how it sounded, because it was unplayable. The strings where flat against the pickups and totally detuned. You couldn't even tune them up at all and when you looked at the end of the neck by the body, it looked like it was set higher than it should have been. It definitely was not inspected at all and I had to wait a couple of months to even receive it.

I'm thinking there was a rush job in the factory because of delays (it still is unavailable, the last time I checked) and it was sloppily put together and shipped out anyone giving a $@!&. I know there was someone else here (I can't remember the name off hand) who also had an early model and has had issue with the neck. Apparently, they said there were other complaints on other forums, I'm not sure.

I'm hoping because there has been more delays that they put their boot up the factory's $@! and made sure that there aren't anymore of these "issues." Time will tell when the reports come in when people get theirs. The one good thing I got out of the whole thing is I know the store I ordered it from (AMS) has excellent customer service and dealt with the whole thing without any hassle. This is one of the reasons I like to deal with them, besides convenience, fast shipping, and one hell of a payment plan structure.

Unfortunately, the reason I don't shop locally is because of issues I've had with customer service (if someone is going to be a dick to me, why would I want to spend my money there?) and other hassles. Of course, the risk is you're buying something unseen, but then again, it's absolutely brand new in a box not touched or beat up on by anyone else. When you think about it, when you pick up a guitar at say Guitar Center, sold as new, it technically isn't. It's been constantly picked up, banged around, and played with by anyone who could come in there. At least with a place like AMS, it's stored in a warehouse untouched in a box straight from the factory. With their return policy, and 45 day guarantee, it's no hassle in case it's a dud. They don't set up anything because they couldn't sell it as new (because it is out of the box) and would lose money on it. I was told this by AMS when Fender tried to blame them for the Bass VI being a dud and shipping it because they didn't take it out of the box from the Squier factory. Sorry, it wasn't their fault and they dealt with it in a professional manner. I've actually got a hell of a deal on a Schecter Diamond-J bass because of this. It was sold as "scratch and dent" for $325, but it was flawless condition. The only issue was the box was opened previously. By the way, that is one nice bass.
