Hello, just bought my first bass ever. Yesterday was the first time I ever held one. Been playing 6 string about 4 years now. I bought a Squier Jaguar Special Bass, Has active pickups & EQ or how ever it is said. Paid 149.00 with new G.B. It is the 329.00 list or 200.00 at Musician's Friend one, Trans Red. I like it, it has loud deep bass. Very good beginner bass, I think it will be a keeper. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted a bass, so at 53 I bought me one. The Owner and the Tech both played it for me, so I know it does what I want. I tried out around 10 or so different kinds and a few different brands. I used the pentatonic scale for 6 string and it gave me a idea of how it feels and sounds. They say it is set up perfect and intonates rite. I did like the 5th string low b, but could not justify the extra cash, till I know for sure I like bass. I wonder if any one could answer this for me, I have read the how to identify the guitar year. But mine say, ICS12045085. So I take it, it is a 2012 Indo build at the Cort factory. But don't know what the letter S stands for. It wouldn't stand for Samic would it? I would think they would be two different company's. I would not think it would stand for solid. Thanks for any help or feed back. Tom. :)

Congrats on your new bass. Post some pics when you get a chance.

You're correct that the "S" is for Samic. Here's a copy of a post by brotherdave explaining the serial number for Squiers;

IC: I = Indonesia, C = Cor-Tek (Cort), the serial number prefix is followed by a 2 number year. IS: I = Indonesia, S = Samick, the serial number prefix is followed by a 2 number year. For example "IC02" Made in 2002. In 2009-10 some Indonesian Squier's had the prefix ICS09XXXXX and ICS10XXXXX. There are a number of standard models that have the ICS prefix some are FSR but some are just normal run models. It therefore appears as though the the S in ICS is only an indication as to whether it is a Factory Special Run or FSR guitar (manufactured by Cor-Tek in Indonesia). It also appears likely that any FSR guitar beginning with ICS will be a Squier 'Standard' as opposed to any of the other models i.e. CV, Deluxe etc.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, I think I am going to like the bass. I am going to keep an eye out for the perfect 5 string. I did not get hurt on this guitar. Thanks for the "S" info. Seems like the Cort factory makes lots of company's guitars. :D Tom.

The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz V is a very nice 5 string. I own one and I believe it's the best bass for the money, $329 retail.

True.....I did do that plus replaced all other electronics to get a fuller sound, but the stock sound is very good. I'm just being picky with it and I don't believe it's necessary.
Stock the bass is $329 and you can probably get a little of that knocked off if you call the online store before buying.
JMHO....but I don't believe you can find a better, or just as good, 5 string out there for that price.
I have approx $450 in mine after the mods and I believe the same holds true for it.

I just got a Squier VM Jaguar Bass Special. It's got the P & J pu's My local music store matched the on line price of $199.99 - quite a bargain. Had to order it because I've always wanted a three color sunburst.
My first bass was a Fender Bullet, before there were Squiers. The back was like a flat plank of wood. Entry level basses have come a long way.

I've got two, the first is a Vintage Modified Jazz bass and I just recently purchased a Vintage Modified P-bass V. I'm really impressed with both!

I have a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass and a Vintage Modified Custom Telecaster. I would have a Bass VI, but there's been a hold up on those getting in stock for whatever reason. So two, with a third on it's way so far.

At the moment, I have just one, a 2003 Squier P-Bass in Torino Red. Like CPL, I'm waiting for the stork to deliver my new Bass VI. It seems like it's been 9 months.

Yep, I'm the first owner. For that matter, it's the first bass I ever owned.

It's hard to believe that 2003 is going on 11 years already. Speaking of the past, I remember seeing Squier basses that were labeled as Fender, but had Squier series in small labeling. That was probably around the early to mid-90's. That reminds me, have you ever checked out this website? http://www.21frets.com/ It goes into the history of Squier, when they were Japanese-made. I suppose this is the origin of Fender Japan, from what I understand.
