I have the chance to purchase a Squire Vista series Musicmaster bass for a mere $105. What do you think, a good deal?? Does anybody have one?? I like to add unique guitars to my collection, and am not familiar with the Vista series. Look like mid 1990's vintage. It is vintage white w/ chrome hardware and in fair/good condition(only cosmetic issues, plays well) This short scale bass is a cool little guitar, but is it worth it?????

For this price you should pick it!

Buy It...made from around 1995-1997. I've only seen them in a bright greenish color

Well, I bought the 1997 Squire Vista series Musicmaster bass for $106. It is in very good condition, minus a bunch of chips in the paint. As far as playability goes, and electronics, it is in excellent condition.
The only thing I have found with the short scale(30") basses is it is hard to get a good, loud tone out of the low E string. It seems to lack tension, and feels and sounds a little flat, and lower in volume. I have found this on other short scale basses I have played. Any remedy for that???
It was well worth what I paid for it tho, and I am happy to have gotten it.
Funny story behind it. I first saw it at a local pawn shop for $99 a few months ago. I did not have the money that day I was there, so I passed on it. It was on my mind, so when I did have the cash, I went back to get it. It was gone! Sold! I was kinda bummed out, as I wanted it. I just went back to the pawn shop the other day, and there it is!! I told the owner of the shop that I was sorry it got sold, and he told me the buyer came back in and pawned it back to them!!! There it was, so I snatched it up. Brought it home, and had to clean it up really well, but underneath all the dirt, it is in pretty good shape, and everything works.

Nice choice, the Vista Series were supposed to be pretty good.
If it has the single coil sized pick up, those are sometimes a problem. Seymour Duncan makes a replacement pick up that size that is supposed to be a great replacement and really beef up the tone. I'd imagine it's worth a shot.

Very nice. (Looks like you need new strings. )

Yeah, new strings are on the list. I am trying to find a set of short scale strings that will let the low E string sound loud and defined instead of flat and lifeless. It seems the low E has so little tension on the shorter scale that is is sort of "thudding" instead of a clear tone.
Any help on the new string idea? I know that roundwound are the brightest strings, so I will stay with them. I am not sure if going with a light gauge set will help the low E problem. I like GHS or Rotosound strings on my P-bass, so I will probably stay with one of those brands.

Good idea, not to mention new string usually brighten up dull sounds. Maybe that'll solve that issue? :)

or maybe it needs to be set up properly? if it's thudding, maybe it's the pickup? maybe it's the intonation on the bridge? is it buzzing too?

if the guitar is set up properly, obviously new strings won't hurt.

I got the Musicmaster bass sounding a lot better by lowering the pickup. It cured the problem pretty well. The bass sounds more clear. It actually is a lot of fun to play. As a guitar player, the short scale neck is more comfortable, more guitar-like. I still enjoy playing my long scale Precision, but this little bass is fun, and sounds pretty good.

funny story..I.was at Guitar Center on Sunday the fourth of April between the hours of 2:30 and 5:30. I was trying out different guitars from high end $1500 strats, teles and Prs to a entry level $179.00 Squire tele affinity. Playing through a $1300 Vox tube amp, for the first time, I could really here the tonal difference between each guitar. Then all of a sudden.. the guitars on the wall started shaking. As I looked out through the glass door, I saw people heading for the exits. I, myself too, preceded towards exit . 25 minutes later... I purchased that Squire tele for $179.00. The guitar gods were happy!.
