i got my first bass almost a year ago as a birthday present from my wife. its a 2003 squire affinatty P bass no scrachs or dents with a hardwood pick guard that i crafted myself for it, and have come to learn that a jazz bass will be better for me. So i took my bass into a music store near me to check on trading it in on a jazz bass. my heart stopped, and i almost fell over when they told me that the bass i have cherished for the past year "was only werth 50$ for trade in and that i was lucky that i still had the original pick guard becose they would have to put it back on to be able to sell it." so i guess my question is should i try going to diferant music stores to trade in or would that just be waisting my time and gas. i am willing to get rid of my bass in order to get a jazz bass even if i need to pay a bit more for the jazz but 50$ dose not even get me close to getting the cheapest jazz bass i can find in a store.

music stores will always give you the least price they can so they can sell it on at a profit, part and parcel of business i;m afraid.
Personally if i were you i would keep hold of the bass and buy the jazz your after, that way you will always have the squire has a 2nd bass and you may even want to mod it up a bit, squires are great guitars for modding
I'm not a big fan of modding basses, i would prefer them stock, as the saying goes " if it aint broke, dont fix it".
I've just bought a squire precision special and i love it.

Well, it's business, they will give you wholesale price, because then they will sell for a profit on the retail side. Any retail business' do these practices to make money. Squier does not hold they value what so ever. You have to remember you bought it on a "value" price too in '03. They will probably sell it for under $150...there wasn't much to play as far as the price go see. I don't think it's a "screwing" of any kind, just wholesale/retail thing. Try selling it yourself on Craiglist, look at similar post and you can get an idea what the market demands on the private party sale. Good luck.

x2 for craigslist.

My thinking is that especially if you have some "how to" books to put with it you could get $100 from someone who wants to learn to play bass.
