I would have to suggest the Squire 5 String Jazz Bass. I've been playing mine for about two years now and it has amazing playability and excellent sound and sustain. Also if you are going to look at instruments from pawn shops make sure you can play it through an amp and check all of the frets on each string to make sure they aren't muted due to a warped neck. In general give it a close inspection before you walk out the door with it.
