Anyone have any recommendations?

new or used? If new, I think the cheapest are the starter pack. I could be wrong tho.

sorry my bad.i think you can land a good bass for that price .keep your eye out for music stores that are going out of bussiness and offer cash .unfortunatly someone elses bad luck can be your good. stay clear of pawn shops and such because most of the products are stolen or badly damaged

Hey there.

I don't know how much the vintage modified basses are there.
But I love my Squier VM Precision so much!

Check out Guitar Center, they usually have a good selection of Squiers. I missed out last month, they had a Vintage Jazz for $219.00.

It was a special sale price drop of $60.

Make a friend at the store closest to you and call often, they take trade-ins too.

If you're interested in a Squier MB5, let me know I have one that I'm looking for a good home to send it to.

get on craigslist.org. It shouldn't take you long to locate one and a small amp for $200

get the Squier modified fretless jazz bass! and install a new bridge, The badass II bridge made a serious difference! It was more punchy and brighter, sustain was better, I also replaced the strings (roto sound flat wounds) check out the video of my squire fretless with a badass II at http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseacti ... d=35735220
I installed a pearl pickguard and replaced the knobs with the standard jass bass knobs (slapin, funky) enjoy…

with the economy in the tank, a lot of guys are selling off gear, I've found some really nice stuff cheap, not too many people have the disposable income they had a year or two ago. Check some of the bigger pawnshops, you may be surprised 8)

I bought my 13 yr old son a Squier Vintage Modified Tele bass and that puppy sounds and plays great. I've had more than one person ask me if I "hot rodded" it before I gave it to him. Nope, I tell them "bone stock with just a string height adjustment".

"Vintage Modified" trust me.
