for myself the education started with the Ultimate Beginner series Basic Bass book and has continued to their Basic Blues Book. I also have their Blues Jam Book. And of course, a few bass tab books that I rock to those songs (Buddy Holly and Nirvana) to keep me busy.

How have all of you gone about learning/learned?

Picked up my uncle's Pbass copy, and started listening to the bass lines of songs I liked. Then he kinda let me have the bass, I bought a book and a Peavey Basic 50 amp. Just applying what I've been reading and practice, practice, practice. Still learning now too, except now I go on line to ck the scales I want to learn, here's what I go through: http://www.angelfire.com/id/bass/

Hope you can use it too.

wait, are you trying to convince me to play something other than pentatonic (blues) scales? Heresy! I say Heresy!

Seriously, awesome link. Thank you.

i got my first bass about a year ago for my birthday and have been playing from tabs i find on-line, and practicing those tabs every day. and have surprised myself at how well i have been doing. i hope to actually take some lessons when that is financially possible for me. but until then i am happy just to be playing.

I have been making good progress on books I got off of amazon.com used... the whole enterprise was around $10. Worth considering!

The route I took was way too expensive and way too pointless:

Instruments: First Act Bass -> Squier P-Bass Starter Pak -> Used Yamaha RBX 170 -> Used Yamaha RBX 374 -> Squire Modified 70's Jazz -> Fender MIM Jazz with Bassline P/U's

If I had it to do over again, I would go straight to the Fender J Bass

Books: I spent way too much on books and DVD's that never really paid off. What I did get that was worth every dime:
Bass Guitar for Dummies by Patrick Pfeiffer
Complete Learn to Play Bass Manual by Stephan Richter
First Bass by Josquin de Pres
Berklee Practice Method-Bass by Rich Appleman
Bass Guitar Secrets by Alex Sampson

Each one of these book/CD combos provide a wealth of music theory, practical exercises, and style instructions that are first rate. The best single system method is by far Bass Guitar Secrets. As much as I didn't want to believe it, you really get everything (books, CD's software) that you will ever need to not just learn how to play bass, but to also play well in a band setting, especially if you don't get to play with others that often.

Like others have mentioned, learning to accurately play your favorite basslines is a great measure of your skill development. Just be careful not to become a mimic. you will get exposed during impromptu key changes.

Peace

Well , I started playing with an old acoustic guitar listening to the Chuck Mangione recording and some of Michael Jackson's Thriller tape . I played or tried to play the bass lines on that guitar for some time . A cousin of mine gave me an old Fender Mustang bass and I tried to play through the music without an amp . Then that bass I sold it to a friend ( I regreted doing that a few years back) and in christmas my parents gave me a Sears Hondo bass , short scale with a 15 watt amp . With it I started listening to Rush and all the 80's heavy metal bands and just played along with the music . When in 8th grade I was in the school band but didnt learned much because I was more into rock music . Then in college I studied music for 2 or three years and changed concentration to psychology then back to music and then dropped from college because I started playing in clubs almost every weekend . 5 years went by and then I got married and as most of you know it is difficult to live off of music unless you are a good music reader and play every style and gig with lots of bands at the same time (that's the way here in PR) and so I went to study automotive technology , worked for Chrysler and the Mercedes Benz and now as a technology school professor . And after 8 years of being away from the music scene I'm back . And Im glad for it , I needed to play again but in this ocassion Im not playing clubs ,only private gigs like weddings and private parties . It is not a rock band anymore but a 10 piece orchestra that plays salsa, merengue ,disco,80's ,rap, you name it we play it ! So I have to learn to play all kinds of music which I think is a great thing because you can get more gigs !

these are all cool responses. It is amazing how many "self-taught" musicians are out there. I guess the lessons route is just too expensive. some cool reading to come back to now that my honeymoon is over.

Well, I wanted to take lessons, but at the time, I wanted a lot of things and not follow through with it. If I know now back...well you know, lessons would be the one I'd take. :)

lesson are great but they are $25 for a half and $50 per hour where I live. I have a billion other things I need to pay for and I am thinking that is probably what leads everyone else to alternative routes. I am just happy to see so many people went the self-taught route. I am finding that I am learning at a pretty good clip. I can pretty much bang out any reasonably easy song at this point and with work can play just about anything but the most complicated songs.

I am starting to hold my own with the 12 bar which was my goal!

I bought a brilliant book called "Progressive Bass Guitar" by Gary Turner and Brenton White.
Its starts from the basics then progresses up to advanced level and his a wealth of information, i still use it. when im not using it i just sit and play.
