I have a Squier P Bass Special (love it!) and from what I can tell having been at a music store today and playing a MIM J bass is that the only real difference is the MIM sounded cleaner which I am assuming is due to the PUPs. I am strongly considering forgoing the '51 bass and getting some nice PUPs installed. What are people's thoughts on that?

Are the higher end ($299) Squires that have the better PUPS (w/ the magnets that begin with A that I can never remember the names of) any better and do they compare with the MIM strats for clarity?

I actually like the feel of my Squire P-Bass Special and playability BETTER than the MIM J-Bass... I would really like to try the MIM P-Bass Special with the active electronics, however to get a true comparison.

I was thinking that I wanted a J-Bass and/or a telecaster bass .... but now I am thinking I might be a P-Bass Special kinda guy,

Hey, man, honestly, try it out all out. Suggestions are just that, suggestions, from our own personal experience. Try it out, and make the best decision for you, that you like. You know where I stand, from communicating on here, as far as what I prefer. So my suggestion, try it out, my personal experience, I like actives. Squiers top line are usually better than the MIM. Usually. So ck it out, if you decide, this will be your thing, go with the MIM Fender. If not, Squiers top of the line should last as long as any Fender - less you don't take care of it - but won't hold value as an MIA, MIM don't hold value as well as MIA or for that matter MIJ(CIJ) either.

PS. are you talking about alnico pups?

yes, alnico.

I was at Daddy's Junky Music and played a couple of MIM Fender J-Basses and I wasn't overly impressed when I played them against the Squier J-Basses. Even the sound wasn't that much better but I do think it might have been slightly quieter... but this was the standard Squier J-Bass... that was all they had.

The American J-Bass just made me drool. Definitely a difference there. LOL

I didn't realize how nice a real quality instrument of that level (meaning the MIA) was. It would be worth every penny if I had that many pennies... but I don't.... so I will probably stick with the Squiers UNLESS the P-Bass Special MIM w/ actives is really impressive. Conveniently, Daddy's didn't have any of them for me to try.

The MIA does have a great quality to them. I've played a few recently, for the money tho, there are better basses out there that doesn't quite break the $1000 barrier and IMHO it's a better quality - but that's for a different forum, right...
