as a follow-up the old english lemon oil worked like a charm. I don't see any sign of drying of the wood and the fretboard is nice and smooth to play on... plus, my P-Bass Special now smells nice and well, lemony.

You could also try Dr. Ducks AxWax(contains no wax!). It'll cut thru gunk on rosewood as well as maple and also condition the wood nicely. Use it on your strings for added life to 'em. For really dirty necks, I've used Dr. Ducks along with a little toothbrush scrubbing action. Just don't re-use on your teeth....

i do use it but i destring 1st and then my f'board has to be cleaned all over and apply new strings otherwise no point in using it if nothing is clean.

i may sound OCD and im not but whats the point in investing in cleaning and pro-longing solutions when you dont use them to the full advantage?
