In anticipation of my Christmas present which I have no decided will definitely be a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Bass, I have for better or worse, taught myself to play the bass with only my thumb. lol

My OCD just simply won't let me get away without using the fingerrest. I am assuming I "cup" it with my fingers to help "pull the thumb down".

So not sure what long-term negative effects this will have but I can now play just about whatever I can play normally by only using my thumb.

As an aside, it makes it easier to mute open strings and keep them from ringing.

:)

oldschool(really old) players used to play like that you know, is nothing wrong
a bass teacher told me that he had a friend that was a legend in cuba for his playing skills but when he played he had the most akward technique in both hands, but he was used to play like that, with the thump, and the way he fretted the notes is really hard to describe but is what most will call an unprper technique.
so dont worry if your technique is not usual, if you can play like that just play, altough with just thump i not sure how would you manage to play fast

Speed comes with practice, the thing is when you use your thumb, when I was learning to slap, my issue was the plucking that would mess up the groove. Practice, practice, practice. :)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am putting in 2-3 hours per day rigth now. Trying to wear out the frets on my Squier so I can convince my fiancee that I need another one! :)

It's amazing if you put the time in how much you learn. To think I had this thing sitting in the closet all those years.

You know, I used to practice 2 hrs/day. Now, I just do 15 - 30 min, finger exercises and some scales, but usually I'd do 1 - 1.5 hrs of jamming with the amp in one of those days. To keep me motivated, I buy new things for the bass, strings, an advertisement re: certain things for the bass that I would want, so it keeps me motivated. Watching your favorite band can get you motivated too. As far as wearing out the frets...hehehe, good luck

I am trying to be dedicated to the instrument. I was a failed guitarist but for some reason the bass just clicks more. Maybe because my fingers find the strings easier... I have no idea.

I have humble goals. I just want to get to the point where I can buy a program like Band in a Box and play along and solo.

Nothing fancy... I was thinking Jazz but I have really taken to the blues.

It seems like a very reachable goal.
