Hi everyone. A few weeks ago I bought a Chinese Squier Affinity Jazz bass (serial number CY***). In all specs it's said that it has alder body.

However, I've already heard more than once that in fact Chinese Affinity basses may be made of agathis or some distant alder relative that isn't what we all think of as alder.

So does anybody know what Chinese Squier Affinity Jazz basses actually are made of?

First, nobody can reliably tell a sound difference between an alder or agathis body on an Affinity Series™ Jazz Bass®. You sort of prove the point with the question...

Second, there is no global conspiracy on bass guitar body woods. Different times, different countries, different woods, different components (...) are the SOP with FMIC's economy priced products - at present, this results in Affinity/made-in-China/alder.
Rest easy, trust the specs.

The vast majority of Affinity basses will be Alder. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule, but 99 times out of 100, you'll find Alder under the finish. Agathis is usually reserved for the upgraded models (Classic Vibe, Vintage Modified, Signature Series), and though there are subtle sound differences in the wood, at that price point you won't likely hear them. If there is any difference to be recognized between Affinity instruments, it'll usually be the weight. But even then very little. Agathis and Alder are similar in weight and density. Of the instruments that I have owned, the Alder basses have had a slight advantage in weight.
