A used Squire P-Bass. I found one used for $110, and it's great! I use it to record my demos. I did have install a new guitar jack and new strings.

I recently bought a "P bass special" which has the features of jazz bass & a precision bass - the tone range is incredible (with a 100W Rumble amp). It's better than the jazz bass I had 30 years ago

Squier have really upped their game with the new Vintage Modified series. All the basses except for the fretless have impressed me greatly and I am considering the 70's jazz over an MIM jazz.

I just bought one of my boys an Affinity "J" Bass. He's just starting. I was amazed at the quality of this "Crafter in China" bass. Fit and finish are perfect. Big slab board neck without neck sprout and very decent tone. Best of all it sounds like a Fender! Plus sustain for days. If I wanted to I could shim the neck a little (it's PERFECTLY straight) but the action's fine for a beginner. In a word, I'm impressed.

I have an Affinity P-Bass which I changed to a string through the body bridge. My flatwounds now have almost the same sustain as roundwounds. All of the Squier Basses are excellent quality for an entry-level axe.

I bought a abused affinity off a druggie guy for 25 bucks. Not my main bass, but I do use it, after a setup and strings it plays pretty good, sounds good too, doesn't have quite the bottom end of my 87 MIJ P-Bass but it does OK. I would recommend one to anyone looking for a good low cost bass 8)

jazz standard, abit pricier but you get your moneys worth.... even if you had to sell it someday, your more likely to than to a pbass- though im not saying theres anything wrong with one or the other: just my preference and opinion.

I have an Affinity Jazz Bass and although, it doesn't have that studio sound, it has an immense tone quality. Only thing is that some of the strings get shaky and frets are really noisy when hit 8)

I also have a p bass special and like the other guys say, it sounds the business with the pj setup and my amp is only a carlsbro bass bomber.
I'm a big fan of squire basses

Vintage Modified P-Bass (the white with black pickguard) is awesome. It's really worth more than the price. I looks really cool and plays really well with the Duncan Design pickups.

I love mine!
