I fooled around a little on a bass a couple of days ago and really liked it so i decided to get one. Problem is which one to get. Should i get a J-bass or a P-bass. Tell me if you have any ideas.

Kind of the same question:
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... .php?t=646

My thoughts:
Why not try both..??
The Squier Standard Series P Bass Special will allow you to play both P & J.
For the money you can't beat it. Play it till you find the sound you really like the most then if you want decide on a upscale Fender in P or J.
I have the Standard Series P-Bass Special with the P/J configuration. I play it mostly with the J volume all the way down it seems so far I prefer the P sounds, although it depends on what type of music you are playing and what kind of sound youre trying to get. In any case Its like having two bases in one. You can't go wrong.

yeah 'Vibe' you have a great point, i'd recommend a jazz bass cause i prefer them but two in one is great for a starting bassist

Try them out and decide which one is best for you. If you like them both, buy one and save up for the other. :)

Vibe gave a great idea on getting one with both. I have that option on my '87, so I agree.

I do want to vent, anyone here notice, someone asks for help, then never comes back to the topic they started. I see lot of questions on the P forum and J forum, they get 30 answers (opinions) and not a single reply from the OP. Oh well. Sorry for the vent. :(

Yeah, it happens a lot, a shame really. A little more common courtesy would be nice to see both on the 'net and in person. Internet forums are a great resource for new musicians. I started playing before there was such a thing (or I didn't know about it) and had to learn a lot the hard way. It's too bad that it is taken for granted by some.

Any specific reason to go with the P Bass for a beginner? I started with a P Bass copy (Hondo, it wasn't a good bass), but that's what my uncle had lying around the house, so I learned with that bass no other special reason. Then I got my '87 Power Jazz Bass Special, which is a P Bass body w/J Bass neck. I say try both and see which one you like better.

I feel the P-Bass has a better sound and for some people they may say its all together just easier to play now im not saying that the J-Bass is bad or anything but i prefer the P-Bass :)

Nope, never got that impression that u said the J Bass is bad, just wanting to know why it would be better to learn on the P Bass. I like the P Bass body, but with my small hands I really like the J Bass neck. I've had basses with wide necks - SR506, yeah 6 stringer - and that was a stretch for my hands, but I manage. So far the J Bass has offered me a good neck for my little hands to play bass with.

get one with both pups
the p special, it has the most popular features of both basses, jazz neck, precsion body, p middle pup for that p punch!! and j bride pup for that j versatility
so that would be a good bass if you are not sure what to get even when you tried both

I played a P-bass. I really liked it. Otherwise, that's all I know.

If youre just learning, Jazz basses are infamous for very slim necks but it depends on you.
